Match report Thatcham Town Cricket Club 2nd XI v Cove 2nd XI

Thames Valley League Division 4B

Cove: 238 for 6

Thatcham: 205

Thatcham lost by 33 Runs

On what has become known as black Saturday in the Thatcham cricketing calendar, Thatcham 2nd XI narrowly lost to league leaders Cove at Brownsfield on Saturday.

With some 12 first and second XI players missing Thatcham 2nd XI fielded a less than ideal side against the current unbeaten division 4B league leaders Cove, however Skipper Bird was immensely proud of the performance of Thatcham’s side produced especially the U15 trio of Alex Wood, Jona Spriggs and Ben Denton-Powell.

After losing the toss and being asked to field Thatcham struggled early on to contain the attacking approach of openers Taylor (40) and Anthony (39) as they looked to post a large total. However the introduction of Moore was once again the catalyst Thatcham needed as he removed Taylor, and almost doubled up on his success as new batsman Dilawar appeared to step on his stumps two balls later but was reprieved as confusion reigned.

Voller removed Anthony next over as Thatcham looked to regain control however Cove’s experience showed as Tompsett (95 not out) slowly went about his business without much fuss, well supported by the other batman as Thatcham’s bowlers toiled to make inroads into the Cover batting line up. Thatcham efforts should be congratulated as they contain Cove to 238 for 6 from 50 overs with P Moore (2-52) and N Monger (2-52) the pick of the bowlers ably support by some excellent fielding especially from youngster Alex Wood who displayed the commitment and attitude often missing at this level.

Thatcham’s response to Cove’s competitive total was both heartening and disappointing. With only 3 front line 2nd XI batmen available Thatcham needed somebody to take charge and this proved to be Thatcham’s fundamental failing as Lewis (27), Allen (25), Bird (16), Monger (39), Moore (21), Mahoney (22) all got starts without anybody converting them into a match winning innings.

Regardless of the eventual loss, Thatcham can take many positives from a game
they got agonisingly close to drawing as they lost their last wicket with only 3.1 overs left and the score on 205. U15’s Jona Spriggs (20) and Ben Denton-Powell (6 not out) gained special mention from the away side for their exceptional maturity against what is easily the best bowling attack in the league, both proving they can hold their own at a higher level of cricket.
