Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v North Maidenhead 2 on Sat 23 Aug 2014 at 12.30
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 96 Runs
Match report
Thatcham Town Cricket Club 2nd XI v North Maidenhead Cricket Club 2nd XI
Thames Valley League Division 4B
Summary
Thatcham: 234 for 9 (N Monger 72 not out, S Bird 58)
North Maidenhead: 138 all out
Thatcham won by 96 runs
Thatcham bounced back from their disappointment of the previous week to secure a resounding 96 runs victory over North Maidenhead on Saturday.
Skipper Stephen Bird decided to take a break from the normal tactics as he decided to bat first on another excellent Thatcham track. Thatcham’s top order struggled early on as North Maidenheads bowlers found an excellent line and length. Both Gale (16) and Harland (20) looked assured with the bat but both fell victims of a lack of concentration.
Thatcham’s decision to bat first looked naïve as they laboured to 46 for 5. Skipper Stephen Bird and Nick ‘Batting is Easy’ Bishop began to repair the early damage as they combined their 60+ years of cricketing experience into a stand of 93 that push Thatcham towards a more defendable total.
As the home side entered the 40th over and the score on 139, Bird and Bishop looked like they had salvaged the Thatcham Innings, however as many club cricketers will know losing one wicket can change the balance of a game and Bird’s (58) momentary lack of concentration cost him his wicket shortly after he reach his half century. Thatcham then struggled from 139 for 5 to 178 for 9 within an 8 over period.
With little to lose Nick Monger (72 not out), ably assisted by the last minute replacement Elliot Denton-Powell (9 not out), decided to dismantle the North Maidenheads bowlers by bludgeoning the ball over the leg side boundary on no fewer than 15 occasions on his way to an excellent 72 not out, passing the 50 mark in only 26 balls, and plundering 56 runs from the last over 4 overs to take Thatcham’s final total to 234 for 9.
Thatcham’s bowling efforts were much more measured than their batting efforts as the North Maidenhead batsman were removed from the middle at a steady rate, aided by some fine catching, in particular Steve Bartholomew who took three excellent catches from behind the stumps.
The North Maidenhead batsmen never came to terms with the home sides accurate bowling especially the ever reliable Tim Mahoney who once again proved the backbone of the home sides response as he removed 4 batsmen for 23 runs from his now standard unbroken 14 over spell.
After being reduced to 48 for 4, Razaq (31) and Kumar (38) tried to emulate the same effect Bird and Bishop had had previously in the day for Thatcham but Ben Denton-Powell put pay to that idea as he removed Razaq with the score on 101 to a Andy Harland juggling act in the deep.
North Maidenhead had little left and were finally bowled out for 138 in the 34th over giving Thatcham their first 25 point haul of the season.
