Match report Thatcham 1st’s fell to their first defeat of the 2007 league campaign on Saturday at North Maidenhead.

Maidenhead won the toss and elected to bat and with Dave Shaw looking in good touch the Thatcham bowlers had to bowl good lines. Ali Naqvi and Julian Wood bowled well and made early in roads and after a good piece of work in the field to run out Shaw for 24 Thatcham looked in a good position at 43 for 3.

Things got better as Nick Bishop 2 for 44 replaced the tiring Wood and picked up the first of his victims to leave Maidenhead rocking as 78 for 4. However, Tarrington took charge of the Maidenhead innings and played some powerful shots on his way to a well constructed 71.

His dismissal to Naqvi (4-80) looked to have let Thatcham back in with the score on 174 for 7 but Simon Carter 48 not out had other plans as he and Ahmed 21 not out took the home side to an unlikely 236 for 7 from 52 overs.

In reply the Thatcham innings began slowly in the face of some disciplined bowling. Daniel Stone made a steady 36 but wickets fell at regular intervals. Brief cameos from Duncan Johnson 24 and Julian Wood 30 gave the visitors some hope, but with the majority of the North Maidenhead fielders on the boundary turning the run rate up would be tough.

James Ettridge made a solid 25 not out in a losing cause but the Thatcham innings closed as 146 all out. Lee Atkinson picked up 8 for 53 for the home side.

A disappointing result after such a great start to the season, however Thatcham will be hoping to get back on track in the next fixture against Tring Park II at Brownsfield.
