Match report Thatcham 1st XI returned to winning ways with a six wicket win over Tring Park II……

Thatcham won the toss and elected to field. Thatcham built some good early pressure with Ali Naqvi and Andy Harland conceding just 18 runs in the first ten overs. The pressure paid off with Harland picking up the first wicket of Halshall. Ambrose began to play some fine strokes, but Thatcham were always in with a chance. A double bowling change saw Simon Rider bowled a tight but luckless spell, and Chris Bird bowled well to pick up the wicket of the remaining opener Adams. With Tring 69-2 from 25 overs Thatcham were in the driving seat, but Read and Ambrose batted sensibly punishing anything loose. Nick Bishop was introduced along with Ali Naqvi to try to keep things tight, both bowled well and stuck at the task picking up the wickets, Naqvi bowling Ambrose for 55 and Bishop getting the valuable wicket of Read for 67. With Tring reduced to 201-5 they battled hard in the final overs to finish on a challenging total of 235-8.

Thatcham made a steady start in response, with Steve Wyatt and Danny Stone. With Stone in particular playing some fine shots through the covers. He was unfortunate to be caught for 29 by an exquisite catch from Orton. Duncan Johnson came to the crease in determined mood with the score at 60-1 there was still a mountain to climb. Wyatt and Johnson set about the bowling punishing both seam and spin, before rain interrupted the game for some 50 minutes. After the delay Johnson and Wyatt laid into the attack, smashing the attack to all parts. Taking some 50 runs off the next six overs, until Johnson went for 57. Thatcham then hit a sticky patch loosing both Naqvi for just 7 and Wyatt for 86. Matt Denness and James Ettridge steadied the ship and played some aggressive shots to finish the job in just 42 overs. Denness not out 20 and Ettridge 18 not out.

The boys stuck at the task in the field on a particularly humid day. The lads showed great strength of character to chase down the score and returning to winning ways.
