Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v NORTH MAIDENHEAD on Sat 04 Aug 2007 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Thatcham took another step towards winning the Thames Valley league, beating third places rivals North Maidenhead comprehensively.
Thatcham won the toss and elected to field. Terrington and Morley mad a positive start with Wood and Harland bowling well. It was Wood who made the first break through removing Terrington caught Johnson. Ahmed soon followed again from Wood, with North Maidenhead stuttering at 40-2. Chris Bird was introduced with instant effect, removing Morley in a bizarre fashion, the batsmen managing to sweep the ball to first slip! Wood finishing a fine spell (2-34 from 9) was replaced by Naqvi, he bowled well but was luck less and the batsmen started to be in the ascendancy with Thatcham fielding poorly, Martin and Asghar building a steady recovery. Johnson was introduced to the attack in place of Bird and Harland replaced Naqvi. They bowled well in tandem, with the field more defensive it was up to North Maidenhead to take the attack to Thatcham. Harland removed Asghar and Martin shortly followed to Johnson leaving North Maidenhead at 169-5, Carney followed just two balls later to Johnson. Captain Simon Carter came in but struggled against the tight lines and was soon on his way C&B to Harland and Inshaw was removed first ball, leaving NM 180-8. Parsons and Dozell batted well to add a further twenty to give Thatcham a testing target of 201 for victory.
North Maidenhead took the old ball, Wyatt and Wood started in their usual attacking fashion, but Wyatt fell in the third over for just 16. Wood and Johnson formed a vital partnership putting on 83 for the second wicket and building a platform for victory, before Johnson (30) fell to Ahmed. Wood (55) soon followed, giving North Maidenhead a glimmer as Thatcham were reduced to 107-3. Naqvi and Stone steadied the ship, runs not coming easily at the beginning, but North Maidenhead’s decision to take the new ball in the 30th over proved costly with the ball coming on easier the first over went for 19. It was the increase to the run rate that gave Thatcham the confidence to push from 147-3, the remaining runs seemed to come easily with Stone and Naqvi both looking assured. Thatcham reached the target with ten overs to spare, Naqvi 58* and Stone 27*.
It was another good comeback, we could have been chasing quite a few more, so we did well to peg North Maidenhead back. The batting was awesome once again, we said at the start of the innings we just needed a steady chase keeping wickets in hand, we did exactly that and we worked hard for a good win.
Results went our way, beating North Maidenhead left them trailing us by sixty points, Amerhsam lost to Chesham by ten wickets, not scoring a single point. They maintained second place in the league some fifty-nine points behind Town.
