TRING PARK 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 11 Aug 2007 at 1.30m
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
After packing the travel sweets, passport and checking that all the players were suitably inoculated, Thatcham met at dawn for the clash with Tring Park.
After arriving at the ground some 4 hours later, Thatcham went through their pre-match warm ups as Rider woke up and then spewed up.
Stand in skipper Matt Denness gleefully meet with Tring captain and fed him the usual “we are dreadfully short as Harland has dropped me in it”, routine. The coin went up and after watching Thatcham warm up the home skipper fancied bowling the visitors out and elected to bat upon winning the toss.
Big Ali Naqvi took the new ball and Rider took the 2nd over. Paul Jenkins came on after the short opening spell from Rider and he and Naqvi managed to keep Tring quiet and also nipped a couple out. After bowling 7 overs Denness had to remove PJ from the attack as we feared he might snap.
Thatcham then turned to spin first with Chris Bird and then Nick Bishop.
Naqvi and Bishop bowled well in tandem and managed to pick up further wickets whilst keeping a lid on the scoring in the middle stages of the innings. Matt Bowyer was the main stay of the Tring efforts as he made a quality 80 until he chopped on from Bish. Troy Head came in and took the attack to Thatcham as Tring looked to increase the run rate. He bludgeoned 50 before Ali trapped him LBW.
Jenks returned to the attack for the final few overs and produced 2 good final overs and with Ali still bowling at the other end Thatcham bowled Tring out in the final over for 211.
Ali bowled a mammoth 26 overs of quality swing to claim 4 for 67. Jenkins on his first 1st XI outing this year claimed 3 for 27 from 9 overs and Bishop 2 for 72 from 13 overs.
After tea Thatcham opened the run chase in good style with Jim (the toes) Ettridge (20) and the chirpy optimism of Steve Wyatt. Ettridge fell to a surprise long hop with the score on 56 which brought Daniel Stone to the wicket.
Wyatt was now in full flow and was powering the ball to all part of Tring whilst Stone was trying to steal the strike. They added 81 runs for the 2nd wicket until Stone attempted to pull a half volley and was bowled for a handy 47.
As usual things were made interested as Thatcham managed to lose 4 quick wickets. However, with Rider 6 not out and now feeling much better thanks and Wyatt still scoring heavily the game was drawing to a close. Wyatt went to his hundred with a large maximum over wide long on and the pair had added 36 when disaster struck as Wyatt missed a piece of filth and was bowled around his legs for a majestic and vintage 111 including 17 fours a the six.
The Thatcham nerves were again on edge and Redmond was hiding in the toilet. However, Nick Bishop politely blocked his first 2 deliveries before Bish Bashing his 3rd into the next village bringing Thatcham another 20 point victory.
Steptoe and Proudfoot claimed 3 wicket a piece for the home side.
Thatcham now lead the TVL Div1 by 61 points with Harefield heading the chasing pack.
