Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By five wickets

Match report Thatcham’s second string won their first game of the season with an ultimately comfortable five wicket victory over Falkland II’s at Brownsfield. The visitors were inserted and started against each end of the age spectrum as the father and son pairing of Tim and Tom Mahoney got Thatcham off to a steady start. Both saw chances go begging early and Chris Brown and David Bloor (20) were able to post a fifty partnership.

The introduction of part time bowler Chris Barnes broke the partnership as Nick Bishop held on to a fine one handed catch at mid wicket. Bishop himself then accounted for Ridley before Brown and Ben Thomas threatened to take Falkland to a big score. Brown reached 59 before making the mistake of playing for turn against Bishop and giving an easy return catch. The next ball saw Paul Sharp at slip live up to his name with an excellent catch that measured 4.2 on the Richter Scale.

Pete Randall helped Thomas add 50 before becoming the first of Tim Mahoney’s three late wickets. Thomas was eventually bowled for 63 and some late order hitting from Falkland’s youngsters saw them reach 200 off their45 overs. Bishop (3-22) and Mahoney (3-39) were the main wicket takers but Barnes did well enough to suggest he’s got some overs to bowl this season.

Thatcham got off to a flyer as Gavin McDonald and Sharp added 40 in six overs before the former was beaten for pace and dismissed for 26. Keep didn’t last long as he was out thought by Randall but Steve Bartholomew continued his improvement as he joined Sharp in taking the score to 87 when Sharp went for one big shot too many and was on his way for 31.

Bartholomew played very sensibly but didn’t miss out on putting the bad ball away and received support from Robb Fraser (28) in adding 57 before Fraser became Randall’s second victim in an excellent spell of 2-15 from nine overs. However, the rest of an inexperienced attack couldn’t give the support he needed and despite losing all rounder Barnes for just 1 the two Stephen’s, Bartholomew and Bird saw Thatcham home with few alarms and ten overs to spare. Bird ended on 26 and Bartholomew just three short of a half century but a job well done nevertheless.
