STOKE GREEN v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 26 May 2007 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Thatcham’s second string finally got their first win of the season with a narrow two wicket victory over Stoke Green. Despite some of the players being unavoidably delayed in getting to the ground Thatcham still decided to field first on a damp wicket and outfield.

Veteran Tim Mahoney and youngster Michael Hobbs (1-24), making his second team debut, both offered some loose deliveries to start with before Hobbs induced a false stroke and bowled Younis for 13. Mahoney soon settled into a rhythm and four consecutive maidens saw the pressure build until he got his first wicket, S.Raja bowled for 14.

By this stage it was clear Thatcham’s bowlers were not going to be able to rely on their fielders as the first two of seven dropped chances had already gone down. Rupasingha and Bourne both benefited from this as they added fifty in good time before the introduction of skipper Perry Moore brought the breakthrough, as a modicum of turn defeated Rupasingha and he was lbw for a belligerent 38. S.A. Raja followed in similar fashion before a catch was finally taken and like buses another followed quickly to remove Bourne for 39 and give Mahoney, who suffered most at the hands of the fielders, a well deserved second wicket.

Wickets fell regularly through to the end of the innings with Moore finishing with excellent figures of 6-40 from 15 overs. Mahoney defied age and a nasty blow to his already dodgy knee to bowl throughout the innings to finish with 3-84as Stoke Green amassed 194 from their full complement of overs.

Some heavy rain at tea made the wicket a little more tricky and Thatcham were soon in trouble at 4-2 after Malcolm Bloor holed out for 0 and Stephen Bird was run out by some distance. Gavin McDonald and Tom Donnelly (35) set about rebuilding the innings with a partnership of 89 and following another break for rain started to dominate proceedings. Donnelly showed he is starting to fulfil his potential with some fine strokes all round the wicket and McDonald set his stall out to bat through, but still made sure he punished the bad ball.

Stoke Green finally took the new ball and a flurry of wickets saw Thatcham slip to 164-8, including McDonald for an excellent 78 and the home side now assumed the role of favourites. However, Liam Redmond had other ideas and he was joined in the middle by Tim Mahoney, patched up after his exploits with the ball and the pair went calmly about scoring the remaining runs.

Redmond kept attacking and the policy worked well as he pulled out some flashing strokes, one of which summed up Mahoney’s day as it crashed into his right shoulder. All concern for the ageing swinger was overtaken by disbelief that he had stopped a certain boundary but Thatcham didn’t have long to wait for the winning runs in the 42nd over. Redmond finished 38 not out with Mahoney on 5.
