MARLOW PARK 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday on Sat 19 May 2007 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Thatcham Town 3's travelled to Marlow Park 2's for their first match of the season, following the rain affected conditions last week. With a youthful side, containing several of the club's most promising colts, Thatcham won the toss and decided to bat first.

On a damp, slow and low wicket, the openers Bob Gadsden and Nik Stewart, struggled to score with any real fluency and both departed earlier than they would have liked for 7 and 13 respectively. Michael Hobbs (14) and Piers Bragg came in at 3 and 4 and began to bring Thatcham back into a position of respectability by playing some aggressive shots. Hobbs fell for a promising 15, but Bragg continued his impressive innings in difficult conditions, on his way to Thatcham's top score of 44. Nick Monger (15) came in at 5 following the departure of Hobbs and looked good for his 17 runs, including a 5 following some poor Marlow Park fielding.

Then began somewhat of a collapse for Thatcham as they lost 5 wickets in quick succession. The ship was steadied however by some superb batting from Tom Mahoney (15), ably supported by Eddie Wylie. Mahoney's innings was one of real class, playing a wide array of shots against some good bowling in difficult conditions. Both players running between the wickets was particularly admirable, putting the fielders under pressure at every opportunity! Eddie Wylie was disappointed to depart for 12, though was able to hold his head high, having played a major role in the 54 partnership. Daniel Stephenson (15) joined Mahoney for a superb last wicket stand that saw Thatcham passed the 200 stage to give them maximum batting points. The innings could have been ended before the final tally of 222 all out was reached, but again Marlow park let themselves down in the field, as several chances went to ground. The innings came to a close when Mahoney was stumped for 42, leaving Stephenson 20 not out at the other end.

Marlow Park's innings began shakily. Both Gavin Ansell and Daniel Stephenson struggled a little, bowling to two left handers, but Stephenson managed to find the edge of D. Harris' bat in his first over, when he was on naught, only to see the chance put down. Ansell managed to sneak a low swinging full toss passed the Marlow sipper K.Turner, to bowl him for 1. Thatcham hoped for more wickets to follow but found that they were unable to find a break through and Harris and D. Hawkins put them to the sword. Tom Mahoney replaced Stephenson and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, though he struggled with a sore elbow and was taken out of the attack after 4 overs. Eddie Wylie replaced Ansell at the other end and tested the left handed Marlow bats with his left arm over away swingers. Nick Monger started well with his leg spin, but after his first 2 overs, the Marlow batsmen looked to get after him, sweeping well.

The Marlow 1 and 3 bats took the home side from 15-1 up to 192 before the second wicket came, Ansell bringing himself back on can consider himself very lucky, after a poor slower ball was met as a full toss by the sweeping Hawkins, only to see his effort hit firmly to Eddie Wylie at mid-wicket, departing for a fine 46. Michael Hobbs was brought on from the other end to replace Wylie and bowled with some impressive pace to test the Marlow bats, though his length was a little short at times, allowing the batsmen to rest on the back foot. Daniel Stephenson, returning for his second spell managed to defeat the Marlow opener (Harris) once again, having him caught for a superb 114. It was all too late for Thatcham though, the damage having already been done, Marlow went past the Thatcham total inside 40 overs to finish on 226-3, to win by seven wickets.

Thatcham left the field disappointed, but ended the day encouraged by the performance's of some of their younger members. In particular the batting of Tom Mahoney, Eddie Wylie and Daniel Stephenson, without whom, the Thatcham total would have been far lower!! Also the bowling of Daniel Stephenson and Michael Hobbs, both of which bowled with pace, aggression and were able to test some good batsmen on several occasions.

This leaves Thatcham at the lower end of the TVL Division 6B table. They play hosts to Datchet 3rd XI this coming Saturday and will look for their first win as they look to climb the table
