Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday v EVERSLEY 3 on Sat 02 Jun 2007 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report Thatcham Town's 3rd XI suffered their third defeat in a row at the hands of Eversley 3's. Eversley won the toss and chose to field first, a tactic they've been known to use for many a game.

Thatcham opened with Malcolm Bloor and Nik Stewart and saw both men return to the pavilion early doors, as firstly Nik Stewart edged through to the keeper for 1, then Bloor wore a yorker length delivery on his somewhat fragile front foot, breaking his toe. Rather than retire hurt, Bloor valiantly tried to hit out, but was bowled the next ball to leave the hosts reeling on 9-2, the opener departing for 7 runs. Nick Monger came in at number three and Sean Huckins, returning earlier than expected after breaking his ankle only three weeks ago, joined him at number four. They began their partnership well, Monger in particular striking the ball with confidence and hitting a succession of fours. Huckins took a little while to get going, feeling his way through his first few overs, before hitting two glorious straight sixes. They saw the score through to 82, before Huckins was trapped LBW by the inswing of Hammond for Eversley, departing for a fine 37. Michael Hobbs came in at 5 only to depart for a duck two balls later, failing to realise the slowness of the wicket, he drove the ball straight back to the bowler. Louis Appella, at six, went for 2 runs and Carl Self for a duck also.

This left Thatcham on a worrying 101-6, with their hopes pinned on the ever improving bats of Nick Monger and Tom Mahoney, coming in at number eight. Both men looked to work the ball around nicely, picking up singles wherever possible, and more often than not, dispatching any loose balls to the boundary. Monger brought up his fifty in the 36th over, and was disappointed to be out caught a short while later, for a superb 54. The score now on 145-7, Thatcham could ill afford to lose any more wickets, and with the Thatcham skipper, Gavin Ansell, joining Mahoney at number nine, a period of consolidation could have been the order of the day. Instead though, both men looked to get after the second change Eversley bowlers, with Mahoney continuing to work the ball around nicely and Ansell looking to hit out. A tactic that worked well, Ansell hitting a quick succession of fours and 3 sixes and Mahoney hitting plenty of twos with a few boundary's thrown in for good measure. The Thatcham total passed the 200 mark in the 45th over, but on 204, Ansell was bowled, trying to continue his aggressive style, for 36. Mahoney was looking for his first fifty of the season, but fell in similar fashion for an invaluable 46. Daniel Stephenson went first ball, looking to defend, leaving Eddie Wylie 1 not out at the other end and Thatcham all out for 211.

Thatcham, fielding Vince Monger as a sub for the injured Malcolm Bloor, opened with the bowling of Michael Hobbs and Gavin Ansell. Hobbs' immediately troubled the Eversley bats with his pace, though did not enjoy bowling on such a soft wicket, following all the rain earlier in the week. Ansell picked up his first wicket in his first over, bowling Hammond for a duck. He picked up his second in the sixth over, trapping the other Eversley opener of 7. With the score on 21-2, Thatcham were hopeful of pulling off their first win of the season, but the Eversley three and four bats started to look comfortable and the Thatcham bowlers began to tire quickly in the sunshine. Hobbs was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in his first 5 over spell (5-1-0-13) and was replaced by Daniel Stephenson who also began well. Ansell's 5th over went for 14 runs, but he kept himself on for a further over and managed to get the wicket of A. Martin for 17. Though that was very lucky, as it was a full toss that he top edged to square leg, Michael Hobbs taking the catch. Eddie Wylie replaced Ansell and picked up a wicket in his second over, his left arm over swing bowling doing for N.Swan at number 5, Carl Self the catcher. The Eversley score was now on 65-4 and the game looked like it could go either way. Stephenson and Wylie toiled away, but without further success.

Hobbs replaced Stephenson for his second spell and picked up the wicket of A. Davidson, for 35, Carl Self taking his second catch of the game. Eversley now on 95-5 looked to consolidate with M. Martin and J. Collen at six and seven, and took the score up to 134, when some excellent fielding saw Sean Huckins at gully, run out the former for 35, with an inch perfect throw. Thatcham now needed quick wickets, but they were not to come, as Eversley continued to push the score board along, Nick Monger, replacing Hobbs, with his off spin, was unlucky not to get any wickets as the ball constantly went in the air, just not to hand. The closest he came was a caught and bowled chance that dropped just over the bowlers head and outstretched arms. Tom Mahoney replaced Wylie at the other end, and bowled well but found it hard work on the slow pitch, to penetrate through the defences of the Eversley batsmen and was wicketless from his 5 overs. Ansell returned towards the end to pick up his forth of the day, bowling M.Spooner for 14, but that was the last success they were to see as Eversley passed the Thatcham total in 41 overs, 214-7 to win by 3 wickets.
