Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday v HAMPTON HILL 3 on Sat 19 May 2007 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 93 runs

Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI got their season away to a great start on Saturday with a fine 25-point win against Hampton Hill III’s.

Put into bat on a slow damp wicket at Henwick, Thatcham top order made a watchful start, and after loosing an early wicket, the experienced Micky Stone and youngster Marcus Macgeever steadied the innings taking the score to 58 before MacGeever was out for a very well worked 21.

The good work was continued and Thatcham progressed to 129 for 3 before a mid innings collapse saw them reduced to a perilous 146 for 9. However a spirited last wicket partnership of 50 between youngsters Matt Taylor and Robb Clare gave the score a measure of respectability - Thatcham being all out for 196. Mick Stone batted superbly in tricky conditions for 64 and 14 year old Matt Taylor struck seven boundaries in his entertaining innings of 38 not out. K Rice with 4 for 36 was the pick of the Hampton Hill bowlers.

With a much better total to bowl at than had been expected at one time Thatcham bowlers looked for the early breakthrough. However the experienced Hampton Hill openers R Coates and J Marmanan held them at bay until the 10th over when Robb Clare bowled Marmanan for his first senior wicket for the club. Clare finishing with fine figures of 1 for 11 from his 6 overs. However this brought in D Coates who looked as comfortable as anyone in these conditions, but he soon was to run out of partners as the Thatcham second string bowlers got among the wickets. The experience of Neil Stevenson (1 for 15) and skipper Andy Stephenson (5 for 20) proving too much for the Hampton Hill middle order as they were reduced to 56 for 7 when Coates became the third victim of a Stephenson hat trick.

It was left to the Thatcham youngsters to mop up the tail – Greg Cooper, Will Harwood and Marcus Macgeever (2 for 6) all showed great promise with the ball as Hampton Hill were finally dismissed for 83.

A very encouraging 25 point victory in a potentially tricky first game of the season but next weeks opponents Wokingham Oaks and Acorns are likely to be a much tougher proposition.
