WOKINGHAM OAKS & ACORNS v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 26 May 2007 at 1.30pm
Match was Tied
Match report
In a remarkable game at Bearwood College on Saturday Thatcham 4XI tied with Wokingham Oaks and Acorns – both sides being dismissed for 119.
Against an experienced Wokingham side, including the opening pair who plundered an unbeaten 185 against Thatcham last year, Thatcham elected to bowl on a wicket that looked to favour the bowlers. However it was spirited fielding from 14-year-old Carl Self that brought immediate reward as last year’s century maker Thornton, was run out attempting a second run on a throw from the boundary. When Mattie Taylor, also only 14, then had the Wokingham skipper Herrington well caught, again by Self, it was the Thatcham youngsters who had Wokingham in big trouble at 5 for 2.
However Evans and Lynch steadied the innings taking the total to 61 before the Thatcham pair of Micky Stone and Andy Stephenson put Thatcham back in the driving seat by reducing Wokingham to 69 for 7. Thatcham were unable to push home the advantage as the last 3 wickets put an invaluable 50 runs before they were eventually bowled out for 119 runs in the 34th over.
Micky Stone with 3 for 41 from his 10 over bowled particularly well, with Stephenson, 3 for 26 and Taylor, 2 for 26, the other wicket takers ably supported in the field by the safe hands of the 6 Thatcham colts turning out for the senior side this week. Lynch with a hard-hitting 33 Evans (24) and Ashraf were the pick of the Wokingham batsmen.
Thatcham got off to a flying start in reply with Paul Roberts taking the attack to the Wokingham bowlers with a quick fire 22 before being caught and bowled off a leading edge by Ashraf. Micky Stone was then joined by Paul Sharp and these two batted steadily against the moving ball to take the total to 73 before Sharp was finally trapped lbw by P Mohammed for a well worked 19. Thatcham still seemed to have the match in the bag and although the middle order chipped in with valuable runs, Wokingham became increasingly confident of a remarkable turnaround as wickets continued to fall. The return of opening bowler Ashraf to support Mohamed continued this collapse as Thatcham slumped to 110 for 7. The pendulum swung back Thatcham’s way as 13 year old Adam Philips and Mattie Taylor held the bowlers at bay taking the score to within 2 runs of victory, but these were to be last runs scored from the bat as Thatcham found themselves on 118 for 9.
With the pressure mounting on both sides Ashraf beat the bat repeatedly but as he strived for extra pace he overstepped – the no ball bringing the scores level. Unfortunately for Thatcham that’s how it stayed when Mohamed snapped up the last wicket to tie the match. Mohammed was the most successful bowler with 6 for 46 from 17.1 overs with Ashraf perhaps unlucky to finish with only 3 wickets for 32 from 15.
A remarkable match and one that both sides probably think they should have won but perhaps this was the fairest, although undoubtedly the most nerve-racking of results.
