Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday v CHESHAM 4 on Sat 09 Jun 2007 at 1.30pm
Match was Abandoned

Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI remain unbeaten this year but had a frustrating afternoon on Saturday with the heavy shower leading to the abandonment of a game with victory in sight.

Looking for a 25 point win and electing to bat first Thatcham openers Micky Stone and Kieran Lynch gave the innings the customary solid start before Lynch holed out for 17 just as he was beginning to take control of the bowling. Micky Stone followed soon afterwards and with Macgeever and Wells also missing out Thatcham 4’s found themselves in the unaccustomed position of 50 for 4.

Nic Stewart then joined youngster Joe Cummuskey and began to rebuild the innings against Chesham bowlers determined to take the pace off the ball. Cummuskey was bowled by a ball that nipped back for 20 and when Andy Stephenson was dismissed soon afterwards Thatcham were still in trouble at 96 for 6.

Youngster Dan Stephenson then joined Stewart and these two turned the match in Thatcham’s favour with a fine partnership of 56. Stephenson curbing his natural exuberance with a patient 19 and Stewart moving on to a superb 50, as these two took the score past 150. The tail continued to wag with Mattie Taylor and Adrian Bromhead chipping in before Eddie Wylie added to the entertainment with a great knock of 27 not out.

Batting honours however go to Nic Stewart who was held the innings together before being dismissed for 60 as Thatcham claimed maximum batting points finishing on 221.

D Ford was the most successful Chesham bowler finishing with 5 for 61.

In reply Chesham were immediately in trouble as 14 year old Mattie Taylor trapped opener Brown lbw in his first over on his way to claiming a superb 3 for 6 in his 5 overs. Able support came at the other end from Dan Stephenson who chipped in with 2 for 11 from his 5 overs as Chesham were reduced to 24 for 5 after 10 overs.

Eddie Wylie then joined in the fun with 2 quick wickets before Benmorg and Ford offered the only real resistance before proceedings were brought to an abrupt halt by the heavy rain.

Controversy followed as the Chesham skipper refused to continue the innings on albeit still a damp wicket, as his remaining batsmen were not wearing appropriate footwear - i.e. spikes. Despite the copious use of sawdust and offers of spare cricket boots it was clear that this could not be resolved and with safety paramount the match was abandoned.

A thoroughly unsatisfactory conclusion to what had in the main been a match played in the best spirit of the game, with youngsters of both sides being given every opportunity.
