Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI kept themselves in contention in the TVL Div 7A with a 6 wicket win in the local derby game with Falkland 4’s on Saturday.

With the wicket still damp from the previous weeks deluge Thatcham elected to bowl first and with runs hard to come by were able to gain the early advantage largely due to a fine spell of swing bowling from Gavin Ansell. Ansell taking the first 4 wickets to fall as Falkland were reduced to 54 for 4 in the 18th over.

Opener Malcolm Thomas was still there however and he and Wilson Carlisle set about rebuilding the innings with a stand of 70 runs for the 5th wicket before Andy Stephenson made a double breakthrough, first bowling Thomas and then trapping Carlisle lbw. Thomas making batting look easy on a slow wicket for a superb 84 was ably supported by Carlisle who made a watchful 15.

Although the lower order chipped in with valuable runs Falkland were finally dismissed in the 52nd over for 153. Marathon spells from Wimbush (18 overs, 1 for 63) and Ansell (17 overs, 4 for 34) were the mainstay of the depleted Thatcham bowling attack, with Stephenson’s 5 for 11 and some superb catches from youngsters Bromhead and Foskett completing the job.

In reply the Thatcham openers Kieran Lynch and Micky Stone put paid to any hopes Falkland may have had of an early breakthrough with a solid opening stand of 110, before Lynch was well caught by Wilson Carlisle one short of his 50. Stone, with a patient and undefeated 59 steadied the ship as a flurry of wickets fell at the other end, and he and Tony Wimbush saw Thatcham home with 6 wickets in hand and 7 overs to spare.

The Falkland bowlers stuck to their task well as batting became easier as the wicket dried out. Chris Garret (1 for 38 from 16 overs) R Stephenson (1 for 14) and M Roberts (1 for 22) were the wicket takers.

A good game of cricket, closer than the score perhaps suggests, all made possible by the sterling efforts of the Henwick groundsmen, who managed to prepare a wicket only a week after the ground was underwater.
