FALKLAND v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday on Sun 22 Apr 2007 at TBC
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 2 runs

Match report Thatcham began their Border League season with a spirited chase against a strong Falkland line up. After winning the toss, skipper Tom Heath had no hesitation in batting on a very flat Falkland wicket. The decision was vindicated as Falkland raced to 60 off the first 10 overs. Aided by some loose bowling and slack fielding Falkland set about building a commanding total as, at the halfway stage, the home side had already brought up the 150. Khalid Zafar (66) and Steven Pope (30) the pick of the home batting. Simon Rider and Chris Bird bought Thatcham back into the game and with wickets tumbling the innings of Ben Thomas (40) kept the Falkland score moving towards the 250 mark. The home side failed to make the most of the last 10 overs as the innings closed with Falkland being bowled out for 266. Wickets were shared around the away attack with Jenkins and Rider taking three each and Bird two.

Thatcham’s openers looked to construct a platform from which the Thatcham team could build upon to reach the target of 267. Chris Barnes (26) set his stall out early, allowing the other Thatcham batsman to build innings around him. Williams (12) and Keep (32) looked to attack the Falkland bowlers early on. Wickets fell at steady intervals and at 92-4 a big partnership was needed to get Thatcham back in the hunt for the 267 required. The big partnership didn’t come but handy contributions from Jenkins (49) and Bird (25) took Thatcham past the 200 mark. With six overs and three wickets remaining, Thatcham needed an unlikely 67 to win. Steve Bartholomew set about winning the game single handedly as he dispatched the Falkland bowlers to all parts. With 19 needed off the last over, Bartholomew bought up his 50 with his second six in consecutive balls leaving seven needed off the last four balls. A boundary was desperately needed but it didn’t come as the Falkland fielders held their nerves to clinch the game by two runs leaving Bartholomew stranded on a spectacular 55 not out.

It was a promising start to the season for the young Thatcham side and although falling at the last fence this time around, coming away with 12 points was more than what was expected on arrival.
