Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday v READING SPORTS on Sun 10 Jun 2007 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 92 runs

Match report Thatcham romped to victory over Reading Sports, in this Border League Division One fixture, thanks to a trio of fine individual performances. On a fine sunny day, there really was only one possible option for the Thatcham skipper, Simon Rider, having won the toss – the boys from Reading would be chasing leather.

Some tight bowling pegged Thatcham back early on, and with the loss of three quick wickets, things weren’t looking too great at 43-3. However, with former test star Ali Naqvi still at the crease, there was still hope of a large score. Rider joined Naqvi and the pair set about rebuilding the innings, putting on 65 before Rider shuffled across his stumps and was trapped in front, stone dead, for a well crafted 25. With two more falling quickly, the bowling side looked on top

That man Naqvi was joined by the experienced head of Nick Bishop and after early caution, they picked up the pace, both men putting the ball around the park. With plenty of overs left, it was down to these two to build a big partnership. Naqvi passed 50 with ease and was well on his way to his maiden hundred for the club, eventually bringing it up with a cluster of lusty blows. Bishop joined the party and brought up his 50 with his own brand of big hitting and finished unbeaten on 57. Naqvi was the last man to depart; having made a superb 141 that entertained all in attendance and helped Thatcham on their way to 277-7 from their 42 overs.

The visitor’s innings never really got going and at 60-5 they were struggling to chase Thatcham’s big total. The opening duo of Naqvi and Rider were right on the spot, bowling some tight lines and giving little away. Both can consider themselves unlucky to not to pick up wickets in their opening bursts. The introduction of muscular seamer Paul Jenkins saw the middle order ripped wide open and with some good support in the field he returned impressive figures of 5-21 – his winter away seemingly doing him a world of good. Backup came in the form of Nathan Redmond (2-36), Nick Bishop (1-16) and Chris Bird (1-25).

With the game seemingly dead and buried, Balaji arrived at the middle for the visitors with the score on 84-8. He proceeded to stroke the ball majestically and aside from three very sharp chances going down, all off of the very unlucky Tom Mahoney, it looked like he could pull something out of the bag. Thatcham had other ideas. With Naqvi returning to bowl at the death, he cleaned Balaji up for a quick-fire 97 and the home side took the victory by a margin of 92 runs.
