CHALLOW v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday on Sun 08 Jul 2007 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Thatcham chase total in typical style

After an epic 5 a side football warm up seeing Smiler Barnes run 20 yrds and rise to 10ft to head home an emphatic winner Thatcham set about the daunting task of fielding first on an absolute belter of a pitch which looked full of runs.

Thatcham started well restricting Challow in the first period of the game with the variation of Simon Rider (7-3-25-0) into the wind and Paul Jenkins (9-2-43-1) with the wind. After 15 overs Challow were 44 for 1 and with the arrival of the Aussie Pro M.Phillipson Rider removed himself from the attack and introduced the combined experience of Nick Bishop (9-3-26-2) and Chris Bird (9-1-52-0). Setting fields to try and keep the pro off strike seemed to work with runs only leaking slowly on a pitch that looked liked it had missed the monsoons of the previous two weeks.
At 30 overs Challow were 120 for 3 with the pro now having reached 50 he was looking to capitalise wherever he could. The final introduction of Andy “Harmison” Harland (8-0-36-2) proved explosive, and once he found the cats eyes down the middle of the road bowled with panache. Although Phillipson managed to post 112 before he departed in the 40th over good quality fielding in the last 10 overs helped to restrict Challow to just 194 from their allocated 42, the highlight being C. Birds direct hit from 40 yards to run out the home captain with his variation away swinger.

Thatcham started the chase with the steady Chris Barnes and out of form Steve Wyatt facing the Aussie Pro and B C Lara, the first session had potential to be high calibre. Wyatt soon remembered how to hold a bat and dispatched Lara’s short deliveries with ease finding the boundary on regular occasions. Barnes (20) departed in the 14th bringing Andy Harland to the crease. Harland soon put bat to ball and with Wyatt still finding regular boundaries the game looked all sewn up reaching 125 for 1 from 25.
Then Wyatt (72) was caught on the line looking for his 12th boundary bringing 15 year old J. Cummuskey to the crease although adding a majestic 14 he was tragically run out backing up. Harland (42) must have felt guilty and soon holed out bringing two new batsmen to the crease. The introduction of J.Phillips looping leg spinners proved to be too appetising for Thatcham and he picked up 3 quick wickets for just 22 runs. The visitors now looking shakey at 161 for 5 requiring 34 runs from the last 7 overs having collapsed in typical Thatcham style. However any doubts were soon put to one side as the opening bowlers of Rider (19*) and Jenkins (13*) knocked of the required target with 9 balls to spare.
