READING SPORTS v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday on Sun 29 Jul 2007 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 44 runs
Match report
After some slight navigation problems from the Thatcham convoy they won the toss and elected to bowl on a very damp surface with gusty winds.
The talented Ali Naqvi (5-2-10-1) was straight into his rhythm dismissing Sunder in his second over and following it with 2 maidens. There were some runs accumulated from the other end, Paul Jenkins (7-0-34-1) struggling to find his line and length early on but he redeemed himself by removing the other opener Singh in the 12th over leaving the home side at 37 for 2. Thatcham continued to look on top as Simon Rider (7-2-21-2) replaced Naqvi and took a further 2 wickets. However Reading looked to fight on as Balaji joined Praveen and they created an invaluable partnership of 71 off the next 11 overs although it could have been a different story if Balaji had been caught early on. Simon Heaver finally removed him with one of his deadliest deliveries clean bowling him for 47. With the middle order now removed and Chris Bird (8-0-35-2) bowling tightly from one end Naqvi (3.3-0-22-3) returned to the attack to help finish of the tail with his occasional off spin. Although there was some tail wagging the home side finished 192 all out with 2 overs still left to bat.
After a monster tea provided by Reading and some usual moaning provided by Denness the visitors were underway with Martin Keep (23) looking in fine touch dismissing any loose deliveries to the rope with ease. Kieran Lynch (1) was just finding his feet until he was adjudged LBW in the 5th over much to the protest of Basil from square leg suggesting it was a tad high. Naqvi (1) followed suit soon after in almost identical fashion and did well to keep his cool as he left the field and went for a long shower! Paul Davis (12) provided some much needed boundaries but tried to late cut one too many as he was bowled in the 11th over. With the pressure mounting on Keep he holed out at mid-on to expose the Thatcham middle order. Bird (3) found runs hard to come by having not batted since June 2006 and Matthew Denness (9) looked in good form before allowing one to sneak through in the 20th over leaving Thatcham devastated at 77 for 6. Steve Bartholomew and Jenkins added some hope for the visitors but after a mis-communication between the wickets Bartholomew was run out for 29. Dominic Melville came and went for 0 and Heaver tried some lusty blows but soon departed for 3. A mini partnership formed at the end to prolong the inevitable with Rider contributing 7 not out as Jenkins was removed LBW reminiscent of some previous dismissals for a well played 38 ending the Thatcham innings at 148 with 10 overs left to bat.
