Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday v SWINDON on Sun 05 Aug 2007 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 12 runs
Match report
Thatcham narrowly missed out on the opportunity to regain their position at the top of the Border League Division 1 as they went down by 12 runs to a useful Swindon team on Sunday. Having won the toss on a scorching day, skipper Williamson had no hesitation in electing to bat on a pitch that offered very little to the bowler. His decision was vindicated as Swindon raced passed the 50 mark without losing a wicket. The opening attack of Mirchandani and Naqvi found it tough going making early inroads as the away side settled well on the docile track. With the early breakthrough being hard to find Thatcham skipper Rider began to ring the changes to attempt to unsettle the away side. It was the introduction of Fraser (7-0-43-1) that brought about the first wicket. This gave Thatcham the chance to attack one end and it was home skipper Rider (6-0-39-2) who did just that removing Williamson for a well made 72. Another quick wicket followed to leave the innings finely balanced. These were the only successes for the home side as the heat began to tell on the fielding side with mistakes becoming too much of a regular occurrence. The away batsman began to pick up on this allowing them firmly back into the game. Mention should go to Tom Owen who found it tough bowling to the Swindon middle order as they looked to push on passed the 200 mark. Naqvi and Jenkins returned well at the death to pick up a wicket each but it wasn’t enough to stop Swindon in pushing on to reach 235 from their 42 overs.
After a quite superb tea, prepared by the home skipper, Thatcham looked to chase down the 236 set earlier in the day. Unlike the home side, Swindon came out of the traps fighting by removing opener Denness with the score only on 4. It was down to fellow opener Lynch to set his stall out and bat through. The innings progressed slowly with Jenkins (19) struggling to find his feet. His downfall brought the talented Naqvi to the crease who, with Lynch, moved the score on passed the 100 mark dispatching some, at times friendly, Swindon bowling. Lynch looked in good control of himself hitting well over the top with Naqvi picking the gaps all too regularly for the away side to cope with. At the half way point of the innings Thatcham maintained hope of pulling off a magnificent chase. However, Williamson began to make the changes and bought opener Cole (9-0-44-2) back into the attack who removed Lynch (66) and Naqvi (52) in the space of two balls to put Swindon firmly back in control. This bought skipper Rider (22) to the crease with the confidence of a reformed Martin Keep (20) who both proceeded to set about hunting down the total. Thatcham’s downfall came as wickets began to fall at regular intervals and the departure of Fraser for a lusty 10 signified the end of the home side’s chances. Thatcham ending up an agonising 12 runs short of the total, finishing on a respectable 223-7 off of their allotted overs.
It was a day of missed opportunities for Thatcham as the hard work put in by the home side was rewarded with a meagre 4 points as apposed to the away sides 20. Thatcham move on and hope to pull off the double over Challow & Childrey this coming Sunday.
