Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday v CHALLOW on Sun 12 Aug 2007 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Thatcham’s quest to become Border league champions gained further momentum following their 7 wicket victory over a young Challow outfit on Sunday. Having managed to win a toss skipper Simon Rider inserted the Challow batsmen onto a pitch that offered a little encouragement to both bowler and batsmen.
The contrasting nature of Thatcham’s opening attack of Ali Naqvi and Dan Stephenson (5-1-25-1) unsettled the Challow openers of Phillipson and Podbery, inducing them both into some lose shots. It was Stephenson who benefited first removing the dangerous Phillipson for 11 who was well caught by Tom Mahoney. Thatcham now sensed that they had an end to bowl at as an uncharacteristically fragile Challow line-up stood in front of them. However, Hume joined Podbery and looked to set his stall out for the innings playing in a very compact manner. However the introduction of Paul Jenkins removed Podbery caught behind, becoming the first of four victims for the debutant Adrian Bromhead behind the stumps. Challow continued to build though, as Moulds joined Hume and pushed the score on passed 50 and up towards the 100 mark. Rider looked to chop and change his attack to bring about a much desired wicket and it was Chris Bird who tempted Moulds down the track only to be neatly stumped by Bromhead. The demise of Hume saw the Challow innings lose direction as the middle order came and went without adding much to the scoreboard. Bishop (7-1-29-1) joined in removing Brahm but it was Bird (9-3-22-4) who took the accolades returning to form with a fine spell of off spin bowling. Naqvi (9-3-27-1) and Jenkins (6.5-2-7-2) returned well at the end to finish off Challow, bowling them out for a below par 142.
After a delightful tea, Thatcham went in the hunt for the 143 needed to rap up a much deserved victory. That man Bird now partnered Rider opening up the innings for the home side against the new ball pairing of Phillipson and Russel (6-1-17-2). It was the latter who made early inroads removing first Bird (7) LBW and then Mahoney (3) soon after caught hooking to square leg. This left Rider (37) battling it out with overseas ace Ali Naqvi who put the tragedy of Saturday behind him to move the scoring rate up and over what was required. Naqvi gave the Challow bowlers very little opportunity to settle as Jones, Till and Harris all came in for severe treatment. Naqvi passed 50 in the manner that Thatcham fans are accustomed to seeing, lofting the ball over cover for yet another boundary. Harris, however, did remove Rider quite fortuitously thanks to a mistimed cut shot that looped straight to backward point. Rider had done his job by this point securing the game for Thatcham with a well controlled innings. Matt Denness joined Naqvi and threw caution to the wind hoping to get the game finished in as few overs as possible. With 10 overs still left to bat Denness placed the ball over third man for the boundary that would seal Challow’s fate. This left Denness not out on 12 but it was Naqvi who was the key finishing with a sublime 86.
It was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Thatcham boys with contributions coming from all around the park with both youth and experience showing their worth.
