Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday v SWINDON II on Sun 06 May 2007 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 3 runs
Match report
A mixture of youth and experience gave Thatcham a winning start to the Sunday league campaign. The game was reduced to 37 overs a side after an accident on the M4 caused Swindon to arrive late.
Thatcham batted first and it was Matt Denness and Ben Hayward who got Thatcham off and running. Hayward was bowled for 2, which bought Adrian Bromhead to the wicket, Adrian looked very good for his 10 but was then caught. Thatcham were now 47 for 2 off 11 overs.
Malcolm Bloor then joined Denness at the wicket and the experienced duo started to get things moving and the score soon raced to 101 off 20 overs before Denness was caught for a good 32. Young Adam Philips then came to the crease and the U13 making his debut for the club looked very promising before falling to the experienced Novais. Fraser then joined Bloor at the crease but was soon back in the changing after not picking Novais delivery and was bowled, Thatcham were now in trouble at 112 for 5, the innings could go either way. Melville then came to the crease and joined the brilliant Bloor and they took the score onto 153 off 31 overs before Melville departed trying to push the score along. The Thatcham innings finished on 195 for 7 off the allotted 37 overs with Bloor 89* not out. Novais was the pick of the Swindon attack with 3-51.
Swindon came out looking to take the game to the young Thatcham opening pair of Matt Taylor and Dan Stephenson, however the pair bowled brilliantly and Swindon were on the back foot with Stephenson taking two wickets and the impressive Taylor one. At 29-3 Swindon’s experienced middle order started to rebuild the innings and Novais and Thompson played the bowling well and soon Swindon were looking favourites at 129 off 24 overs. Thatcham needed something special and Chapple did just that running out Thompson for a fine 58. Swindon lost another wicket and at 156 off 29 overs Swindon looked comfortable, Novais on 49 looked for the quick single to bring up a well deserved 50, but Taylor with one stump to aim at got the breakthrough and at 156, the game was anybody’s.
Swindon kept the game ticking along and with 21 needed off 4 overs and 4 wickets in hand Swindon felt assured of victory. Thatcham running out of ideas bought Denness on and Taylor back. Denness was unlucky with a couple of edges took Swindon to the brink with 9 needed off 3 overs. Taylor wasn’t finished though and managed to trap the batsman leg before and soon took another as young Philips took the catch and now it was 4 needed off 2 overs with only 2 wickets in hand. With Iles still at the crease and only one blow needed skipper Denness proved the difference bowling the last two batsman with the score still on 192. a very tense game with the younger players proving that Thatcham have a promising future ahead of them.
Taylor (3-21) and Stephenson (2-30) bowled well and the ever impressive Bloor steadied the ship with an unbeaten 89.
Thatcham entertain Falkland next Sunday hoping for much of the same.
