PURLEY II v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday on Sun 03 Jun 2007 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 19 runs
Match report
An inexperienced Thatcham Town 2nd XI travelled to Purley on Sunday and showed great promise for what looks a ‘rosy’ future for the club.
Thatcham won the toss and elected to bowl on a somewhat slow Purley wicket. The ‘experienced’ opening pair of Nathan Redmond and Eddie Wylie took the new ball and got Thatcham off to a steady start with only 38 coming off the first 10 overs.
Nathan Redmond brought himself off and was replaced with debutant Greg Cooper who immediately struck trapping the opener (vincent) LBW. Wylie (5-0-20) was also replaced by Liam Redmond who bowled a tight line and both Cooper and Redmond resctricted the batsman from getting away. Liam Redmond was next to get the breakthrough with Tom Owen taking a smart catch at mid on to dismiss Jayasuriya.
Next to bowl was another debutant Tom Owen who replaced Cooper (5-1-1-22). He instantley had the Purley batsman in trouble with ‘flight’ and ‘spin’. The talented 13 year old, showed great knowledge for the game and he continued to cause the batsman trouble. He finsished his first spell in senior cricket with figures of 9-0-4-39. There were also noteable contributions from wicket keeper colt Adrian Bromhead who caught two and stumped one. the other.
Yet another colt Marcus McGeever replaced Liam Redmond (7-1-1-22) and capped a good all round display with dismissing Murgatroyd (31) and smartley catching Patel diving to his left. Marcus finished with (5-1-32-1).
Nathan Redmond came back in to the attack to dismiss the patient Miridul (54) and also cleaned up the tale to finish with 3-17. Purley finished on 161 from 37.1 overs with Miridul the main contributer.
Thatcham opted for experience to open with Paul Sharp and Dom Melville facing the Purley openers. After Melville went early, young Joe Cummuskey, another talent from the production line went in at 3 and looked comfortable in facing both Newman and Patel. Unfortunaley Joe fell to what can only be decribed as a ‘jaffer’.
Marcus came in at 4 and again looked very composed with the bat hitting a glorious cover drive for 4, but was unlucky to be caught for just 6.
Liam Redmond replaced McGeever with Thatcham needing a big partnership from the two most experienced members of the team. Liam looked to be positive with a selection of delightful drives and big hitting took the score from 34 from 14 to 71 from 21, before what can only be desribed as a ‘unlucky’ decision to be given out caught behind for a fine 28 and what looked an assured 50.
Skipper Nathan Redmond joined Sharp after Bromhead has been and gone and looked quite good hitting a couple of boundries to bring Thatcham over the 100 mark with 11 overs still to go. However, the skipper had a rush of blood and gave his wicket away, Young Will Sharp joined his father at the crease and looked a ‘chip of the old block’ with assured display until he fell for a gutsy 2. Cooper soon went and with Thatcham still needing 37 from 8 overs and only 10 and 11 to come.
Young Tom Owen joined Sharp Snr and stayed with him as he achieved a deserved and faultless 50. Despite the return of pacey opener Newman young Tom calmly played him before being run out for 2.
Thatcham ended on 142 all out with Sharp virtually carrying his bat for a well played 51 and Wylie 4*
Purley picked up 22 points to Thatcham’s 8, from a close and enjoyable game in which, several of Thatcham’s youngsters showed great promise.
Thatcham next came is away to Falkland on June 17th.
