Match report Thatcham lost a tense and exciting game at Brownsfield on Sunday afternoon. Having lost the toss and put into bat Thatcham opened up with McKenzie (10) and The Brom (12). After McKenzie departed L. Redmond (7) came to the crease but also didn’t last long. With Thatcham on 34-3 debutant Sam Braine (2) and Wylie (11) were at the crease. After Braine was out skipper N. Redmond (5) entered the fray but again soon left along with Wylie. At 75-6 things didn’t look good but Lynch (38) and Williams (24) gave a glimmer. They took the score past the 100 mark but Lynch soon went. Thatcham innings finished on 128 with only notable contributions from Lynch and Williams.

After the tea interval Thatcham knew that quick wickets were the key if there was any chance of a win. Skipper Redmond (2-29) and Williams (2-19) opened up. Williams with the breakthrough in the 2nd over. Andover started to dominate with Andrews (24) and the patient Baxter (20). Baxter helped push the score onto 75 with the help of Attwood, despite some good bowling from Taylor and young Tom Owen. Sam Winfield, another making his debut got the breakthrough with Brom taking the catch to dismiss Attwood. Then the skipper bowled Baxter to leave Andover on 80-4 with 14 overs left.

Redmond tinkered with his bowlers to try and snatch a wicket or with Bromhead and McKenzie having a go and Liam Redmond (2-15) from the other. Brom showed potential with the ball, but was undoubtedly too good for the bat and Redmond picked up a couple of wickets. Williams came back into action and had M. Andrews stumped by Lynch. Everyone thought it would be a ‘nail biting’ finish with 6 needed off the last over, however, without realising Andover had an extra 7 overs to get the runs but didn’t need them in the end.

A very enjoyable game played on a sunny afternoon ended with Andover winning by 3 wickets. Thatcham travel to Andover on 2nd September for the return date.
