Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 1 Agonising Run

Match report Academy Lose by 1 Agonising Run

There have been some tight Downs League matches v Harwell in the last few years, in 2012 a last ball boundary by Rochy secured a win and this match was just as close. Thatcham appeared to be well on top as a succession of wickets prevented Harwell getting any foothold in the first innings, eventually the visitors were dismissed for 91 with all the bowlers in the wickets - BDP 1/19, EDP 2/10, Will Rowsell on his return from studies 2/16, Tom Owen 1/26 and Eddie Wylie 2/19. Simon Lewis dropped an absolute dolly (fortunately his son Rhys wasn't watching at the time) but it didn't matter.
There was also a good run out by Jack Young, with Tom Beal taking the bails off at the 2nd attempt still good enough.

The run chase appeared to be so straightforward, with a number of in-form senior pros in the ranks including Simon Lewis, Jack Young, Alistair Howell and John Williams in the top 6, that Rochy even called Crown Meads Fish Bar to bring forward the tea 25 minutes. What an error. The Trouts' innings emulated Harwells, slow and with regular wickets tumbling. The top score was Simon Lewis' 16 and Tom Beal's patient 15, but with Eddie Wylie at the crease in the 19th over and with just 4 needed, Town were favourites. It took a moment of brilliance by "Pat Cash", the oppo fielder wearing the tennis cap, who retrieved a ball near the mid wicket boundary and threw down the stumps with a rocket forehand to leave Wylie wanting pushing for the 2nd. By this point Rochy had the tea, packaged in boxes, up against the open oven door to try and keep it warm. There was still time for more drama as Rowsell smashed a shot straight to mid on first ball and then with 2 runs needed and 2 balls left, EDP joined his big bro BDP. 5 minutes of discussion ensued before EDP took strike and again there was good contact with a straight drive but the bowler fielded the return excellently by which point the non striker BDP was already committed and EDP was a few yards short, Town losing by 1 run with 1 ball remaining. Harwell trundled off in shock at their efforts. Well done to them and a really good learning experience for the youngsters in 'game management', as the commentators like to describe it.
Oh, and if you were wondering, the tea was hot enough.
