Match report A fantastic match on a beautiful August afternoon saw the Trouts sneak a close win by just 3 runs. Batting first Town were indebted to the very reliable Jack Young (58) whose average for the season (77) has been the difference in many of the tight games. Alex Wood contributed 20 in difficult conditions as E&W Hendred bowled and fielded brilliantly and Town set the hosts 133 to win.
In response the team talk highlighted the need to field as well as the hosts and the young bowling attack had to step up. Skipper Rochy opted for spin to open at one end, this role was performed superbly by first Jona Spriggs (4-0-21-1) and then Rhys Williams (4-0-25-1), young Rhys' spin ability has emerged as a real asset late in the season. At the other end the pace bowlers were equally impressive with first Will Rowsell (4-0-24-0) and then debutant Michael Vince (3-0-17-1) which meant all 4 bowlers were giving away less than the required 6.5 runs per over. This built pressure on the batting side who started to lose wickets accordingly with 2 stumpings for an excellent Youngy, including a blinder down the leg side off the medium pace of Eddie Wylie (2/16) as well as a run out. Another young debutant Matthew O'Callaghan bowled 3 very good overs for 24 as the hosts looked to up the run rate with wickets in hand at the death. Rochy set a field to defend the low total but was indebted to the accurate bowling that enabled this rearguard to succeed. With 2 balls left and 13 needed Rochy asked Youngy to stand back from the stumps, fearing the only possible avenue for defeat (5 wides); the confident Youngster however declined but the inevitable happened as Wylie sent one down the leg side changing the equation dramatically - 8 off 2 balls and suddenly the hosts were back in it. But the reliable Wylie conceded a pair of 2s off the final two balls as Town just edged it in the gathering gloom.
This was a particularly satisfying victory in that the defence was totally reliant on the youngsters and they were duly praised afterward on a job well done. This match also turned out to be the last of the season after the last 2 fixtures were abandoned.
