Match report Thatcham Town U17’s started their 2007 campaign with a heavy defeat away to yet again a very strong Falkland side.

Batting first Falkland openers Andy Bolan and Ronnie Dey started steadily against the Thatcham opening attack of Michael Green and Sam Winfield who managed to retain good control in the opening overs. Runs however started to flow more freely and with things looking ominous for Thatcham, Michael Green then had Dey smartly caught down the legside by Lynch of the bowling of Green with the score on 34.

This brought in the dangerous Luke Day but he too, after playing some fine shots was dismissed for only 14. Thatcham’s confidence with the ball increased as wickets fell and although Andy Bolan batted superbly for 46 and Ashworth hit some fine blows late in the innings to take Falkland to 153 for 7, it was some way short of their target. The Thatcham bowlers learnt the hard way that bad balls will be dispatched to the boundary at this level. However Michael Green, with 1-19 from his four overs bowled very well, newcomer Rob Clare made a promising debut, but it was skipper Tom Donnelly who put in the bowling performance of the night with 3 for 13 from his four overs. Wicket keeper Kieran Lynch also had a night to remember – 3 catches and smart stumping to dismiss Bolan.

With the start of Thatcham’s innings it was clear that Falkland were fired up and openers Lynch and Donnelly found it difficult to score with any degree of freedom. Quick, accurate bowling limited Thatcham to 28 for 1 after 10 overs. Although Donnelly early on and Appella and Foskett showed some resistance in the gathering gloom against the spinners, the Falkland total was never in danger. Indeed the umpires quite rightly called it a day four overs before the end as it was almost dark, with the Thatcham total on 60 for 6.
