Match report Thatcham Under17’s came off second best in their final Berkshire Colts League game against North Maidenhead on Thursday at Brownsfield.

With the game reduced to 16 overs per side due to the late arrival of the visitors, 10 man Thatcham bowled and fielded well against a North Maidenhead side who looked to play their shots straight from the off. Sam Winfield and Michael Green bowled tightly but without any luck as the North Maidenhead openers shared on opening stand of 42.

It was the introduction of spin from skipper Tom Donnelly that brought the breakthrough in the 9th over, and two further wickets fell in quick succession with a smart stumping from Kieran Lynch – Donnelly again the bowler – and a run out as the visitors looked to up the tempo.

From 53 for 3 however Maidenhead accelerated to 89 for as Adel in particular put bat to ball. The Thatcham bowlers and fielders however stuck to their task well and held the visitors to 95 for 6 from their 16 overs. Sam Winfield (2 for 22) and Tom Donnelly (2 for 24) were the main wicket takers, supported by William Foskett (2-0-11-0) and Michael Green (3-0-9-0) who were the most economic of the Thatcham bowling attack.

At 18 without loss after 3 overs Thatcham openers Kieran Lynch and Tom Donnelly were up with the required run rate but a great spell of 3 overs for 5 runs by Sharaz saw North Maidenhead take charge. Lynch was bowled trying for the elusive boundary to speed up the scoring rate and although Ben Hayward with 19 and Tom Donnelly with 31 not out worked the ones and two they were unable to get Thatcham back in the game – eventually finishing 15 runs short of the target.

Starting the game in second place in the league Thatcham U17’s now have to rely on results of other game going their way to secure a place in the semi finals.
