Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Falkland on Thu 21 Jun 2007 at 6.15pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 36 runs

Match report Thatcham’s second string, some 5 League Divisions below Falkland, won the toss and decided to bat first in the Thatcham Tandorri sponsored semi final of the Lakeside Trophy. Stephen Bird (11) and Robb Fraser (31) took on Falkland’s fearsome new ball pairing, Berkshire’s James Theunison (19-0) and Pakistan’s first class cricketer Rauf Akbar (24-0). Neither bowlers, despite their pedigree, could dislodge Thatcham’s clubmen Bird or Fraser. When Bird retired hurt Stuart Newman (27) joined Fraser and both continued to build on Thatcham’s solid start. Not even the introduction of another Falkland overseas player, Mushtaq (25-1), could prevent further accumulation of runs. It wasn’t until Falkand called upon stalwarts Pete Randall (27-3) and Mark Baker (21-0) that wickets began to fall. Fraser bowled, Newman stumped, Paul Jenkins (7) caught and the unfortunate Tom Donnely (0) stumped off a wide. Thatcham’s spirited lower order showed great determination with John Williams (15no) and Simon Rider (10) ensuring that their team mates would have a defendable total when they came to bowl. Thatcham’s innings closed at 121-6 from 15 eight ball overs.

In reply Falkland opened with Chapman (0) and Stephenson (14). Neither looked comfortable against Thatcham’s opening attack Perry Moore (14-3) and Simon Rider (26-2). After a Bird stumping professional Akbar (2) joined Tom Heath (13). The pair tried to add some stability to Falkland’s innings but when Akbar was caught by Iain Cottingham and Heath gave Rider a return dolly panic clearly set in. Soon after Bobby Zafar (1) chipped one to cover it seemed no other Falkland batter was prepared to join another overseas player, Nick Jones (18) at the crease. Falkland manager Dave Morris, clearly upset at this lack of team camaraderie, called for his captain Mark Foster (4) to join Jones. Once he was ably caught by team man Cottingham off John Williams (22-3) it was left to the Falkland’s triumvirate Chris Brown (8), Randall (1 no) and Baker (3 no) to try and salvage some respectability for the Home Counties Premier Division side. Unfortunately for Falkland they couldn’t and when Jenkins (14-1) removed Brown’s off stump the mismatch had effectively ended with Thatcham ‘B’ progressing to the Lakeside Trophy final.
