Match report Thatcham Town got their TVL 3a campaign off to the perfect start with an 8 wicket demolition of Cove's second string at Grasmere Road on Saturday.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, skipper Duncan Johnson saw his seamers break through immediately as Callum Johnson and Scott Gibson tore into the home sides batting. Johnson bowled Carter (0) and Gibson nailed Taylor (0) and Dilawar (4) as Cove slumped to 6-3. Cook and the experienced Troy Tomsett tried to restore some confidence but Cook (16) was trapped lbw by Johnson to end any hopes of a partnership. Eton schoolboy Des Hartley Russell was then introduced into the attack and caused problems with his pace and aggression and was rewarded when Kodithuwahhu (1) nicked through to Jamie Young behind the stumps. John Williams trapped Taylor (10) on the crease and it was left to Chris Bird to take centre stage as he provided 8 overs of quality left arm spin bowling to rip through the rest of the Cove batting as he took 4-14. Cove had no answer to Bird's control as Thatcham dismissed the home side for just 79 runs inside 38 overs.

The Thatcham bowling unit clicked brilliantly, Scott Gibson 2-19, Callum Johnson 2-14, Des Hartley Russell 1-19, John Williams 1-11 and Chris Bird 4-14 all bowled superbly well.

Thatcham wasted little time in reaching the target and although Simon Rider (3) was run out and Josh O'Flynn (14) were dismissed cheaply, 'gun bat' Felix Hartley Russell smashed the Cove attack to all parts as he reached 59 not out with two 6's and nine 4's to finish the job inside 13 overs.

It was tough on Cove's second string as they had just been promoted from Div 4 and with Thatcham just coming down from Div 2, there were really 2 league's difference between the sides. Cove will face easier opposition through the season and Thatcham will certainly face tougher tests, starting next Saturday with the visit of local rivals Falkland 2's at Brownsfield in what is sure to be a fiercely contested local derby.
