Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Purley On Thames on Sat 06 Jun 2015 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Thatcham made it five from five and continue to set a ferocious pace at the top of Thames Valley League 3a, as they chased down Purley's 167 at Brownsfield on Saturday.
Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson lost his first toss of the season and opposite number Paul Reber had no hesitation in electing to bat first. He must of been wondering what he'd done as Callum Johnson and Scott Gibson ripped through the top order. Johnson clean bowled Priestly for a duck and when Gibson bowled Denton for 1 and had the dangerous Kyle Walcott brilliantly caught by Matt Denness for 5, the visitors were 9-3 and in tatters. Skipper Reber and Patrick Allen started to rebuild until the introduction of Josh O'Flynn saw the dismissal of Allen as he tamely chipped to Tom Mahoney at square leg for 9. Reber stood firm though and batted with great calm and assurance and he found an able ally in Rahu Thava. Reber reached a deserved half century until he played a rash shot at John Willams and was well caught by Callum Johnson for 57. Two runs later Thava followed as he tried to hit Chris Bird out of the ground and was bowled for 28. Youngsters Robbie Jeffrey and George Clarke came together and batted with good maturity until a mix up saw Jeffrey run out for 18 and when Andrew Clarke (10) was dismissed in similar fashion the end was closing in on the Purley batting. Johnson returned to the attack and picked up the wicket of George Clarke for 19, another catch for Denness and when Barclay was stumped by Bartholomew off Bird without scoring, Purley had been dismissed for 167 from 49.3 overs. Caleb Maycock ended unbeaten on 8*.
The Thatcham bowling unit again all contributed with 19 year old Callum Johnson leading the attack with 10 overs, 2-28 and he was well supported by Scott Gibson 10 overs, 2-31, Josh O'Flynn 6 overs, 1-22, John Williams 12 overs, 1-45 and Chris Bird 11.3 overs, 2-31.
Felix Hartley Russell and Josh O'Flynn strode out for the home side, but having hit a towering six from Reber's first delivery, Hartley Russell tried to repeat the dose and could only slice a simple chance to Walcott at mid off and he departed in quick time for 7. Purley had opened up with the old ball but after 13 overs they took the new ball and in Caleb Maycock's 2nd over he nailed Tom Mahoney lbw for 22. O'Flynn was next to go as he 'clothed' a cover drive to Reber for 27. Skipper Duncan Johnson joined the big hitting Josh Winfield and the pair set about putting a dent in the target. Winfield was his usual belligerent self, clearing the boundary with ease and had reached 33 when he mis-timed one and was caught by Denton on the line off Maycock. Thatcham's reply was 116-4 through 30 overs and with 20 overs left to bat and just 52 runs needed, it should have been a walk in the park. Johnson and Steve Bartholomew added 35 together to push the total up to 151 until Allen produced a ripper which took the top of Johnson's off peg and the skipper was bowled for 25. This prompted a mini-collapse as panic set in. Bartholomew was caught by Walcott off Allen for 23 and when Matt Denness (4) and John Williams (0) were both caught Thatcham had lost 4 wickets for just 6 runs and were in real danger of gifting the game to Purley. Callum Johnson showed no nerves though and with Scott Gibson at the other end he hit a bright and breezy 13* to see his side home. Thatcham passed the target in 44th over for the loss of 8 wickets and claimed a 20 point victory to stay at the top of the table.
Patrick Allen was the pick of the Purley attack, claiming 3-20 from his 12 overs of off spin and he got good support from Caleb Maycock 10 overs, 2-46, Paul Reber 6 overs, 1-26, Robbie Jeffrey 7 overs, 1-22 and Rahu Thava 6 overs, 1-13.
Thatcham face a trip to Fleet next as they look to continue their unbeaten run.
