Match report Thatcham maintained their unbeaten start to the season as they recorded a comfortable 7 wicket victory against Fleet on Saturday.

Fleet won the toss and elected to bat and were under real pressure from the start as Thatcham's opening attack of Callum Johnson and Scott Gibson sent down 7 maidens from the opening 10 overs of the game. Johnson struck in the 13th over with a 2 wicket blast as first Downes was caught behind and the very next ball saw Harry Bywaters depart lbw. Josh O'Flynn replaced Johnson and in his 2nd over he removed Leovold, caught behind for 27. Howard Bywaters and Gurney set about rebuilding the Fleet innings and they batted with great maturity, running well and putting the pressure back on the visitors. The partnership had reached 50 when another bowling change reaped an immediate reward as Josh Winfield bowled Bywaters for 36. Chris Bird then got in on the action as he ripped one past Gurney who could only edge to Duncan Johnson at slip and he departed for 27. Bird then trapped Curd lbw without scoring whilst John Williams replaced Winfield and again another bowling change bought another breakthrough as Watkins (18) tamely chipped it back to the grateful bowler. Williams and Bird then mopped up the lower order, Muirden (6) was cleaned up by Williams who then produced a real spitter which turned and bounced and Talbot (9) could only loop up to Johnson, who took a fine diving catch running round from slip. Chris Bird ended the innings, Proctor smashing one straight to Josh O'Flynn at point and he went for 3, Fleet all out for 140 in the 46th over.

The Thatcham bowling unit again all contributed, putting the batting side under huge pressure, John Williams picking up 3-10, Chris Bird 3-42, Callum Johnson 2-17, Josh O'Flynn 1-29 and Josh Winfield 1-21 all amongst the wickets. Scott Gibson bowled an immaculate line and length and deserved more than his 0-15 return from 10 overs.

With 54 overs to reach the target, Simon Rider and Josh O'Flynn opened up for Thatcham. The score had moved along to 18 without loss when O'Flynn nicked Talbot through to Downes behind the stumps for 6. Rider was his usual unflappable self and he was joined by the impressive Jack Young who took the game to Fleet in his busy style. Young had reached a breezy 22 when the spin of Bywaters proved too tempting and he sliced one to cover point. Skipper Duncan Johnson joined Rider and the pair looked in decent nick. Fleet took the new ball and the left arm pace of Muirden put a different angle on the chase as he got the ball to swing and move off the pitch in alarming fashion. Johnson had somehow reached 35 when the return of Talbot put an end to the Thatcham skipper's knock as he chipped tamely to Bywaters at midwicket. The visitors were 111-3, Nelson had struck and the powerful frame of Josh Winfield entered the fray. Whilst Rider patiently compiled his innings at one end, Winfield just opened his broad shoulders and smashed Talbot high and handsome into the trees for two maximum's. The pair added the 30 runs needed in quick time, Thatcham reaching their target in the 45th over, Rider remained unbeaten on 41* and Winfield was 21* at the close of the match.

Muirden was the pick of the Fleet bowling and was unlucky to finish without a wicket from his 10 overs, 0-21, Talbot claimed 2-59 and Bywaters 1-29 from 17 overs of tidy left arm spin.

Thatcham remain top of Thames Valley Division 3a although they are being chased down hard by Aldershot, who rolled Newbury cheaply and remain 15 points behind in 2nd spot. Thatcham entertain Wokingham's second string on Saturday at Brownsfield in a bid to keep the winning run going.
