Purley On Thames v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 08 Aug 2015 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 38 runs

Match report Thatcham's title chances suffered a major setback on Saturday as their batting inconsistencies once again surfaced in a disappointing 38 run defeat to Purley that saw the Brownsfield outfit knocked off the top spot and set up a nervous finish to their Thames Valley league campaign.
Chasing a competitive 208, Thatcham got off to a near perfect start as openers Josh O'Flynn and Peter Spriggs set about the Purley attack with confidence in an untroubled 76 run partnership. But when O'Flynn fell to Pat Allen (4-40) for a boundary laden 56, Thatcham began to lose their way as the run rate slowed and the middle order struggled to find their feet. The dismissal of Spriggs (23) brought skipper Duncan Johnson to the crease but whilst he stoically set about building an innings, he was unable to find any support as a now buoyant Purley exposed Thatcham's batting frailties.
With Johnson helplessly looking on, wickets fell regularly and 135 for 4 became 154 for 9 in just 7 disastrous overs as Thatcham's middle order and tail failed to offer any resistance. Whilst victory looked incredibly unlikely, Thatcham had little choice but to go for the win as Johnson was joined by last man Chris Bird with 54 still required. A promising couple of overs followed as 16 more were added, but Thatcham's slim hopes ended in farcical fashion as Bird attempted a poorly judged single and was comfortably run out with Johnson stranded on an unbeaten 38.
Earlier, captain Paul Reber's outstanding 101 not out was the mainstay of the Purley total as Thatcham let slip a promising start. Callum Johnson (1-26) and Scott Gibson (2-55) both took early wickets and with Purley reeling at 135 for 7, Thatcham were hopeful of a modest run chase. But Reber, who had earlier been dropped on just 21, batted with control and composure and with late support from the tail added a crucial 50 runs in the last 5 overs. John Williams' outstanding 6-73 was the pick of the Thatcham attack but the total ultimately proved too much for a Thatcham side that desperately needs to find some consistency as the season draws to its conclusion.
