Thames Valley League Division 4B

Summary

Theale & Tilehurst: 285 for 9 (A Wigmore 131, R Why 69)

Thatcham: 286 for 4 (Simon Rider 100, Simon Gale 51, Chris Wright 66)

Thatcham Won by 6 wickets

Thatcham 2nd XI produced their best performance of the season as they comfortably chased down Theale & Tilehurst’s first innings total of 285 to gain a welcome 20 points.

Having lost the toss Thatcham were asked to take to the field first as the home side decided to take first use of what on the surface look like a track that could provide a bit of assistance to the bowlers, however the home side knew their track well as they built a total that seemed to provide only two possible outcomes, a draw or a home victory.

Thatcham started well as George Armstrong and Alex Wood bowled a good line to restrict the home side to 38 runs from the first 12 overs for the loss of 1 wicket as Armstrong removed Stephens for 2, clipping the top of off stump. Thatcham then started to struggle as A Wigmore and Singh combined to produce a partnership of 64, with A Wigmore being exceptionally brutal to anything pitched up or short.

Thatcham stuck to the job at hand and after a few bowling changes looked like they had stemmed the tide as Theale & Tilehurst reached 102 for 3. However A Wigmore was joined by R Why (69) as they amassed a stand of 151 in only 22 overs that look to have removed any chance of a Thatcham win. Thatcham knew, however the key to the innings was removing the dangerous Wigmore and when he finally fell to Wylie (3-43) for a fine 131 and the score on 253 Thatcham sensed a chance for damage limitation.

Rhordi Lewis (3-52) was introduced along with Wylie and the pair reduced the home side from 253 for 4 to 285 for 9, allowing Thatcham to have a glimmer of hope for their run chase.

Thatcham’s response and run chase could not have been more perfect as all batsmen took responsibility for their innings to ensure Thatcham never fell behind as they chased the daunting total. Lewis and Rider started in positive form as they added 26 runs to the total in the first 6 overs before Lewis mistimed a drive to mid-off for 17. Rider was joined by Gale (51) who continued his early season form as they added 101 runs for the second wicket to take Thatcham to 127 for 2.

With the foundation’s laid, the wicket of Gale brought Wright to the middle to produce another 100+ partnership as his aggressive approach combined perfectly with Rider’s subline stoke play to take Thatcham to the brink of victory. Wright finally misjudged the length of a delivery and was bowled for 66. Hobbs continued the attack as he added 14 runs to the total from his first 4 balls. Rider completed a great day for the away side as he passed his century with a beautifully struck 4.

As Rider finally fell for 100, Hobbs (28 not out) decided to put the Thatcham team’s nerves to rest as he struck the final 8 runs from the penultimate over to a well-deserved 6 wicket victory.
