Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Stoke Green 2 on Sat 27 Jun 2015 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 26 Runs
Match report
Thatcham Town Cricket Club 2nd XI v Stoke Green 2nd XI
Thames Valley League Division 4B
Saturday 27th June 2015
Summary
Thatcham: 182 all out
Stoke Green: 154 all out (Nick Bishop 5 for 32, Nick Monger 5 for 56)
Thatcham Won by 28 runs
Thatcham’s 2nd XI came out on top in a thriller at brownsfield on Saturday in division 4B of the Thames Valley Cricket League.
Thatcham were invited to bat first on a beautiful sunny day and openers Peter Spriggs and Alistair Howell set about building a firm base from which Thatcham hoped to post a challenging target to bowl at later on in the day. But things are never as simple as they appear as the combination of a great line and length from the Stoke Green attack and a somewhat unpredictable track made scoring difficult. Notwithstanding this combination Spriggs (26) and Howell (13) met their objective as they took the score pass the 50 mark before Howell was bowled by a low delivery that jagged back viciously to bowl him.
This stand was to be Thatcham’s batting high point for some 22 overs as their middle order came and went with wickets tumbling consistently as the home sides batsmen struggled to come to terms with the Stoke Green attack. Only skipper Stephen Bird (26) looked comfortable but when he was bowled for 26 in the 41st over and the total on 131 things didn’t look good. Thatcham’s final pair of George Armstrong (24) and Tim Mahoney (24) provided a life line as they added 51 runs for the final wicket taking the score to 182 and on reflection set up the final outcome of the game.
Stoke Green’s response mirrored the home sides first innings as the opening pair of Gilham and Bourne built the perfect platform for the away side to chase down Thacham’s modest total. Gilham was first to fall, with the score on 72, as he hit a full toss from Monger high and handsome into the deep and Peter Spriggs calmly took the catch. The away side continued to take chunks out of the Thatcham total as Bourne continued to combine hard hitting with circumspect defence as he and Zaman added 35 for the 2nd wicket.
Bourne eventually fell to another catch in the deep as he charged Monger attempting to hit another 6 but only managed to turn the delivery into a full toss and hit it straight into the reliable hands of Lewis at mid-on. By now the spin partnership on Bishop and Monger was working perfectly as they reduced Stoke Green from 107 for 2 to 130 for 7 within 8 overs as Monger (5-56) claimed his first 5 wicket haul of the season.
The home side sensed a victory was now possible but were well aware nothing is guaranteed in cricket as their last wicket stand earlier in the day had proven and Ahmed decided to take to game to Thatcham as he took the score within spitting distance of the total, however Bishop (5-23) was not to be intimidated and a held his nerve as he bowled Ahmed for 19. Bishop then went on to claim 5 wickets as he removed the last two Stoke Green batsmen handing Thatcham a 26 runs victory and 25 much needed points.
