Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Purley on Sat 18 Apr 2015 at 11.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 22 runs

Match report Thatcham got off to a winning start in their first pre-season fixture as they beat Purley by 22 runs on Saturday at Brownsfield.

A poignant and reflective minutes silence was observed by both teams and spectators as Thatcham paid their respects to former 1st XI skipper Daniel Stone who sadly passed away recently. Both teams wore black armbands in Daniel's memory.

Purley won the toss and elected to bowl first and this decision looked to be truly justified as the home side's top order was dismantled by Jeffrey and Junees inside 10 overs. Simon Lewis (5), Matthew Denness (6), Jamie Young (4), Duncan Johnson (0) and Stephen Bartholomew (0) were all back in the shed and at 25-5 Thatcham were staring down the barrel. Jack Young and Chris Rochfort started the rebuilding process, adding 43 together before Rochfort fell for 15. Jack Young had reached a useful 30 but then charged spinner Allen's 4th delivery and was stumped leaving the score at 70-7. A fantastic 8th wicket stand of 160 between Callum Johnson (72) and John Williams (83) saved the day for their side as both batted superbly well, proving the batting depth of a Thatcham side hoping for a promotion winning season. Both were dismissed towards the close of the innings as the home side posted 231 from 43.4 overs.
Junees 4-24 was the pick of the Purley attack.

Scott Gibson struck early in the Purley reply, bowling Clarke for 1 in his 2nd over. Purley run machine Patrick Allen was the real danger man and it took something special to see the back of him. Allen edged Gibson and Simon Lewis took a flying one handed catch at 1st slip to dismiss him for 19. Lewis then turned destroyer with the ball as he nailed the hard hitting Jeffrey for 19, Selveratnam for 18 and then Dendhi for 12 in a triple wicket burst. John Williams dismissed Priestly for 15, a fine catch from debutant Ben Denton Powell and it was left to Purley skipper Paul Reber to try and get his side over the line. He reached a well crafted half century and with some lower order support the game was still undecided with the reply at 176-6 with 5 overs remaining. John Williams made the vital breakthrough as he bowled Reber for 73. Callum Johnson then pinned Junees lbw for 3 and it was fitting that Williams took the last wicket with 2 balls remaining as Nufell was stumped for 13.
Purley finished up with 209 all out in a useful warm up for both sides.
John Williams returned 3-37 in a fine all round performance, Simon Lewis 3-47, Scott Gibson 2-40, Callum Johnson 1-30 and Jamie Young 1-25.
Thatcham travel to face East Woodhay at Malverley's in their next pre-season fixture.
