Match report Thatcham produced an excellent all round display to beat neighbours Falkland by single run at Enborne Lodge on Saturday.

Batting first, Josh O'Flynn and Kieran Wood reached 39-0 before Thatcham old boy Paul Jenkins trapped Wood lbw for 18. Jenkins then proved too quick for Ben Copeman as he clean bowled Thatcham's number three for 2. Scott Gibson joined O' Flynn and an excellent partnership of 60 was the result before Gibson was deceived by the spin of Kalugola and was bowled for 13. O'Flynn was looking in fine form and he passed his 50 from just 47 balls and was joined by Duncan Johnson who made 16 before being bowled by the leg spin of James Bird. An excellent partnership of 66 between O'Flynn and Edward Wylie took the visitors up to the 200 mark with O'Flynn passing a run a ball 100 in a fantastic knock and Wylie adding good support. O'Flynn was finally bowled by Umar Akram for 107 and when Wylie ran himself out just 4 runs shy of a well deserved half century Thatcham were 221-6 through 42 overs. There was still time for Jenkins to take the wickets of Steve Bird for 10 and with the very next delivery Steve Bartholomew, so it was left to Callum Johnson to successfully keep out the hat trick ball and together with John Williams post a total of 231-8 from their 45 overs.

Paul Jenkins was the pick of the Falkland attack, bowling with pace and accuracy to return 4-34 from his 9 overs and he was backed up by Daminda Kalugola 1-42 from 9, James Bird 1-43 from 9 and Umar Akmal 1-20 from 3.

Falkland flew out of the blocks, Will Langmead and James Bird scoring boundaries at will and putting the Thatcham attack to the sword. They reached 100-0 through 15 overs when rain started to fall. Chris Bird was introduced to the attack and he tempted Langmead into a false shot, Steve Bartholomew taking a fine catch and Langmead had to go for a hard hit 47. The players then left the field as the heavens opened and were only able to get back out onto the field around an hour later by which time 15 overs had been lost. With no Duckworth Lewis to go by, the run rate of Thatcham's innings was divided by the number of overs (45) to give a rate of 5.133333 so with 15 overs still to bowl and Falkland batting for a total of 30 overs, the revised target was set at 154. With Falkland already at 100, they just needed a further 54 runs from 15 overs with 9 wickets in hand. It should have been a breeze but Thatcham had other ideas and their three left arm spinners really took centre stage. James Bird had reached an excellent 50 before he fell to his namesake Chris, well caught by Wylie. Bird then ripped out the dangerous Mark Abrams for 1 and Singh for 7. John Williams then got in on the act as he tore through Falkland's middle order. The big hitting Kalugola was bowled for 5 and Sam Rhys was lbw for 0. Skipper Duncan Johnson accounted for Paul Jenkins, stumped for 5 and then his opposite number Craig Williams, caught by Chris Bird for 4. Jason Williams stood up though and he threatened to win the game for his side. Sam Trumper was then run out for 2 and it all came down to the last over. Falkland needed 16 to win and the Thatcham spinners Bird and Williams had all bowled out. The ball was thrown to Kieran Wood who had the task of defending the runs for his side. Williams did his best despatching a 6 and scampering further runs with Akram as support. It came down to the last ball, Falkland needed 6 runs to win but despite his best efforts, Williams could only hit a 4 and Thatcham had somehow won by 1 run. It was a great end to a marvellous game of cricket played in excellent spirit between the two sides.

Thatcham's spinners bowled brilliantly, Chris Bird 4-35 from his 9 overs, John Williams 2-28 from 9 and Duncan Johnson 2-8 from 2.
