High Wycombe 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 04 Jun 2016 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
It was another disappointing performance by Thatcham as they went down to High Wycombe's second string by 4 wickets on Saturday.
Winning the toss and electing to bat the visitors made an unspectacular start against the Wycombe new ball attack of Lane and Lamplough-Buonocore and Josh O'Flynn was soon back in the hutch as he nicked the latter through to keeper Zaib for 5. Peter Spriggs and Simon Rider then steadied the ship and put on 59 together, Spriggs in particular looking in sublime form with shots all around the wicket, until Rider was bowled by a beauty from Lane for 14. Both Jack Young (1) and Tom Mahoney (2) nicked Lane through to Zaib and when Spriggs (55) holed out on the boundary just after reaching an excellent half century, Thatcham were on the ropes at 97-5 through 30 overs. The left handed pair of skipper Duncan Johnson and all rounder Scott Gibson then began to repair the damage as they scrapped against some excellent off spin bowling courtesy of Curzon-Thompson who was getting appreciable turn and bounce from a responsive wicket making it extremely hard for both batters. The pair survived a couple of dropped chances and the partnership had reached 81 when Gibson (39) was hit on the full by Curzon-Thompson and up went the umpires finger to send him on his way. Big hitting John Williams (0) perished on the boundary for the cause and it was left to Johnson and Tristan Allen to see their side to 189-8 from the 52 overs, Johnson run out for 48 from the last ball of the innings trying to steal a bye. If the Thatcham spinners could bowl as well as Curzon-Thompson who returned 3-44 from his 15 overs, then the target was a competitive one. Lane also bowled well for the home side with figures of 3-42 from 15 overs.
Thatcham took the old ball and Chris Bird and John Williams immediately looked threatening and Williams struck in his first over as he bowled Casterton for 0. Bird then bowled Hayes for 6 and when Williams bowled Morgan for 0, Wycombe were three down early doors with just 34 on the board. Wycombe skipper Stevens was looking good though and when James joined him, the pair set about repairing the early damage. The two spinners bowled through 22 overs and with the home side 66-3, Thatcham took the new ball in the hope of breaking the partnership. As is sometimes the case, the new ball came on nicely and Callum Johnson and Tristan Allen went for 43 in a 7 over period, in a momentum swing that was to prove costly for the visitors. The partnership between Stevens and James had reached 119 when Chris Bird came back into the attack and had Stevens brilliantly stumped by Jack Young for 87. Soon after, James pushed one into the off side and tried to take a single only for Tom Mahoney to swoop from cover point and throw down the stumps to run him out and all of a sudden Thatcham felt they could be back in the game. Wycombe still needed 20 runs with a handful of overs left and two new batsmen at the crease. Lamplough-Buonocore had other ideas though as he came to the crease with positive intent, immediately striking boundaries and he won his side the game with an excellent 27 not out. Chris Bird still had time to bowl Zaib for 7, but it was in vain as Wycombe passed the target with 3 overs and 1 ball to spare for the loss of 6 wickets.
Bird 3-51 and Williams 2-64 were the sole wicket takers and had Thatcham managed to break the partnership of Stevens and James earlier then things may have been different but in reality the visitors didn't bowl well enough on a helpful track and Wycombe deserved their victory.
Thatcham entertain bottom side Chiswick & Whitton at Brownsfield on Saturday and will hope to return to winning ways.
