Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v High Wycombe 2 on Sat 06 Aug 2016 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 123 runs
Match report
Thatcham's last five results before this game read lost, won, lost, won, lost, so it was fairly obvious where this result was heading as the good Thatcham turned up and beat High Wycombe 2's by a massive 123 run margin at Brownsfield on Saturday.
Winning the toss, skipper Duncan Johnson chose to bat first and Peter Spriggs and Des Hartley Russell strode out to the middle to face the new ball attack of Harry Lane and Giacomo Buonocore. Both bowlers were getting significant movement through the air and scoring runs proved a tough task as only 18 runs came off the initial nine overs before Hartley Russell edged Buonocore through to slip and departed for 1. An excellent partnership of 69 then developed between Spriggs and Stephen Bartholomew, the latter continuing on from where he left off last week at Henley playing some forceful shots through the off side and the diminutive left hander had reached 35 when he drove at the right arm spin of Connor Haddow and could only find the safe hands of Buonocore at extra cover. Josh O'Flynn had some respite from opening the innings and came in at four but his wretched run continued as he drove hard at his first ball and was snapped up by Stevens at slip. Jack Young then fell lbw to Sawyer without scoring and from 86-1, Thatcham slumped to 88-4 in the space of two disastrous overs. Tom Mahoney is the man for a crisis however and his calm approach together with the rock steady Spriggs slowly began to rebuild the innings. The pair added 39 before Mahoney miscued a pull shot of Parry and he was caught by Sawyer for 21. Spriggs meanwhile had continued to go quietly about his business, passing another half century and he really is the rock that Thatcham bat around. He looked to push on but perished caught and bowled for 62 to the returning Buonocore. Thatcham now 138-6 through 43 overs and in real need of some impetus. John Williams and skipper Duncan Johnson provided just that as first Williams got into his stride hitting a quickfire 27 and then when he departed Johnson turned back the clock and suddenly discovered some form as he blasted a 29 ball half century with four 4's and three 6's to get his side up over the 200 mark. Together with son Callum, the Johnson pair added 46 runs before Johnson senior departed and it was left to Callum and last man Chris Bird to post a total of 227-9 from the 52 overs. 97 runs had come from the last 10 overs in a top effort from the mid-lower order.
The wickets were shared around the visitors attack, Sam Parry with 4-53 from 9 overs, Giacomo Buonocore 2-37 from 10 overs, Connor Haddow 2-51 from 11 overs and Paul Sawyer 1-35 from his 10 overs.
With the pitch taking considerable turn and bounce, it was no surprise that Thatcham took the old ball and opened up with the twin left arm spin of John Williams and Chris Bird. With runs on the board, Johnson attacked with silly mid-on and silly mid-off, slip, gully and and a leg gully as Thatcham went for the jugular. Henry Moore was first to fall as he clipped Bird to Josh O'Flynn at silly mid-on, O'Flynn hanging on to an excellent catch. Morgan was next, just fending off Williams to Tom Mahoney at backward point and when skipper Stevens edged Bird to his opposite number at slip for 19, the visitors were in trouble at 33-3 in the initial stages. Janes and Sawyer put a brief partnership together of 29 before Janes fell lbw to Bird for 14 before the dangerous Buonocore then edged Williams to Duncan Johnson at slip and he took an excellent one handed catch to dismiss him without scoring. The best partnership of the innings between Sawyer and Harry Lane of 34 was broken by Williams who hit Lane on the full and he departed lbw for a battling 11. Sawyer was still there though and the left hander was causing some problems. He had reached 45 when Johnson introduced the right arm off spin of Spriggs into the attack and it took him just 3 balls to get one to turn and bounce taking the shoulder of Sawyer's bat and Johnson held on to his third slip catch of the day. It was then a steady procession as the lower order capitulated in the face of Bird and Williams and it was the evergreen Bird who wrapped things up. He bowled Parry and trapped Burden lbw both for 0 and although the last pair of Haddow and Russell frustrated briefly, they were going nowhere and it was a matter of time before the inevitable happened, Haddow getting a leading edge and looping a simple catch up to Bartholomew at silly mid-off and the innings closed at 104 all out in the 44th over.
Chris Bird took his seasons tally to 38 wickets with a 6-42 return from 21.3 overs and John Williams went to 30 wickets for the season with his 3-50 from 20 overs. Peter Spriggs picked up the vital wicket of Sawyer in his 1-5 spell of just the 2 overs.
Thatcham will be hoping to buck the trend of recents weeks results and get back to back wins as they visit basement boys Chiswick & Whitton next Saturday. Another win will surely go a long way to securing their place in TVL 2b for next season.
