Falkland v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham XI- Sunday on Sun 05 Jun 2016 at 2.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won courtesy of a super over
Match report
Thatcham came out on top in the local derby T20 Bowness Cup game at Enborne Lodge on Sunday, courtesy of a 'super over' victory with Scott Gibson playing the starring role.
Earlier in the day, Thatcham posted a competitive total of 163-5 from their 20 overs on a beautiful Summer's afternoon. Scott Gibson (25) and Simon Rider (38) shared an opening stand of 66, allowing John Williams to come in and play with freedom as he blasted 44 from just 31 balls. Chris Wright (14) and Evan Pocock (16) continued the good work in a solid batting performance from the visitors.
Jason Williams was outstanding with the ball for Falkland, bowling with pace and movement to pick up 2-20 from his 4 overs.
Chris Bird provided an early breakthrough in the Falkland reply as he had Sam Rhys dismissed by a trademark 'one bail left on stumping' by veteran keeper Chris Wright for 4. Rob Marson had to retire hurt for 9 which meant Graham Beal came to the crease to join Ben Piper. Fresh from a century the day before and so often Thatcham's nemesis, Beal started to find boundaries and together with Piper, laid the foundations for Falkland to get back in the game. Piper passed 50 and was striking the ball with power but the introduction of Scott Gibson into the attack changed the game. Wright was outstanding behind the stumps, standing up to Gibson's pace and when Piper strayed slightly from his crease, Wright whipped the bail off with a flash and Piper was gone for 72. Gibson then struck a further three times, Sam Trumper was bowled for 13, Wright then claimed another stumping as Ollie Harrison went for 0 and when the dangerous Jason Williams was plucked one handed out of the sky when a '6' looked odds on by Duncan Johnson for 13, Falkland were collapsing. It went down to the last over and 11 were needed for victory. Chris Bird had the ball in hand and Jared Ashworth and Andre Le Roux had the game to win for their side. 9 runs came from the first 5 balls and with 2 needed off the final delivery, Ashworth could only find John Williams at deep extra cover who returned the ball safely and just a single was the result.
It meant a super over was now required. Scott Gibson was magnificent, picking up 4-20 from 3 overs, Chris Bird 1-25 from his 4 overs was also superb.
Falkland chose to bat first in the super over and inevitably it was Piper and Beal who strode out. No-one could grasp the ball from Gibson, who had a crowd to please and a big occasion and the Kiwi was to prove he was the man for the job. He bowled Beal first ball and when Sam Trumper came in next, he produced an absolute beauty and bowled him as well. Falkland had lost their 2 wickets for 0 and conceded the game at that point.
A great afternoon's cricket and a wonderful advertisement for the new Bowness T20 Cup.
Thatcham face Challow & Childrey next in two weeks time at Brownsfield at 2pm.
