GREEN LYNCH MOBBED

Thatcham’s second string got their TVL 4B season off to a flyer with crushing seven wicket victory over their Stoke Green counter parts, Kieran Lynch leading from the front with an imposing 64 not out.

Chasing a modest Stoke Green total of 126 all out, Lynch ignored the potential mind games that might have followed Peter Spriggs’ first ball dismissal to a cruel ‘shooter’ and went on the front foot to smash the home team’s bowlers for eleven boundaries in a 56 ball undefeated stay at the crease that saw Thatcham home in just 80 minutes and 22.2 balls.

Lynch was well supported by Eddie Wylie (14) as the pair added 49 for the second wicket; Wylie falling victim to a slower ball from the impressive Ifraz (2 for 48 from 10.2). Jamie Young came to crease and looked in fine form, particularly off his legs, before getting trapped in front by Mughal for 26, Thatcham 102 for 3 but the game was now theirs and a swift 18 not out from Steve Bartholomew made certain of the victory, finishing the game in fine style with a straight six into the pavilion.

Earlier, Stoke Green had won the toss and elected to bat on what appeared to be a fairly hard early season track. Veteran opener Gillham put on 22 with his impressive 15 year old opening partner Parmar, before finding Nick Monger at point off George Armstrong.

Thatcham’s opening attack kept the pressure on and this saw reward as Shoaib, looking for a single that was never there, was smartly runout by skipper Alistair Howell. 31 for 2 quickly became 39 for 5, with Green snapping up 3 for 18 from his 9 over stint.

Stoke Green skipper Sheikh (36) and Ifraz looked to have steadied the ship but Howell’s double bowling change of Tim Mahoney and Nick Monger worked well as the pair quickly found their rhythm, Mahoney (1 for 32 from 11) dismissing Sheikh with a wicked delivery that pitched on leg and took the top of the off stump.

Monger varied his flight and pace well and his persistence was rewarded with good figures of 3 for 40 from 11 and Armstrong returned to the attack to close off the home sides innings at 126 all out from 39.4 overs to finish with a useful 2 for 31 from 8.4 overs.

Thatcham can be pleased with a solid performance in the field and confident performance with the bat and will be looking to build on this fine start when they entertain neighbours Theale & Tilehurst at Brownsfield next Saturday.
