Cricket Report
Cookham Dean CC 2nd XI versus Thatcham Town CC 2nd XI Saturday 28th May 2016
Result; Thatcham Town CC 2nd XI (221 for 8 from 48 overs) drew with Cookham Dean CC 2nd XI (304 for 9 from 52 overs)
Thatcham Town’s 2nd XI fought back with a solid second innings batting display at Cookham Dean on Saturday and posted a well worked 221 for 9 from their 48 over allocation in replay to the home sides hard hit 304 for 9.
Having re-grouped at the interval, Thatcham looked to see out the first 20 overs for the loss of as few wickets as possible and then see if the run chase was on. With the loss of three wickets in the first 10 for only 36 runs, that chase soon became unlikely but Thatcham remained on the front foot in a bid to keep the possibility of an unlikely victory alive.
Opener Peter Spriggs looked comfortable against a sharp home attack and, in partnership with Jamie Young, the pair re-established balance to the Thatcham innings and picked the run rate up to five an over with some good running and punishing the bad ball effectively to pick up the boundaries.
Young looked to be in full control and worked the ball to leg with devastating effect but this proved to be his undoing as he timed a pull to mid-wicket so well that the low trajectory shot still managed to reach the longest mid-wicket boundary, only to be well pouched by Jake Richardson, Young perishing for 46 out of a useful 89 run second wicket partnership.
Spriggs continued to look in no trouble at all, reaching a flawless half century and was joined by Michael Hobbs, who kept up the momentum with some fine running between the wicket and he looked to be set before flicking a long-hop to mid-wicket for an easy catch, Thatcham now 161 for 5 from 32.
Cookham rang the bowling changes at regular intervals in a bid to stem the run rate and make inroads to the Thatcham middle order and the returning Faisal Shamsy provided the key breakthrough when he held a sharp return catch to dismiss Spriggs for 70.
With only 14 overs and 129 still required, Thatcham sensibly looked to secure maximum batting points and restrict their opponents points haul through the loss of as few wickets at possible.
Nick’s Monger (28) and Bishop (10) saw the visitors to the former objective and, despite a couple of late wickets, Perry Moore and Tim Mahoney saw Thatcham’s innings to a safe conclusion and 9 useful points, Cookham Dean posting 14 points for their efforts.
Earlier in the day, having won the toss and electing to bat, Cookham Dean took advantage of an even paced track that offered little lateral movement or bounce and made steady progress against the Thatcham opening attack of George Armstrong and Tim Mahoney.
Both openers looked well set before Armstrong produced a superb delivery to find the outside edge of Mangat Jr (21) only to bring Mangat Sr to the crease and, with the in-form Jake Richardson, the pair adding 123 for the second wicket.
Richardson should have perished on 17 when a difficult chance was missed at mid-on but otherwise the home side progressed at 4 to 5 runs an over, setting the platform for a big score and possible early declaration.
Visiting skipper Nick Bishop looked to take the pace off the ball early and turned to Perry Moore and Nick Monger for early spin but neither managed to make inroads and Cookham Dean marched on to 157 for 1 from 31.
A double spin change saw Bishop partner Spriggs for the remainder of the innings, Bishop unlucky not to pick up the wicker of Richardson with a sharp caught behind chance going begging. Spriggs however got straight into the wickets, forcing a rash shot from the watchful Mangat (36) who was picked up to a low catch at mid-wicket.
Australian Lucas joined Richardson at the crease as the pair looked to pick up the tempo with some fine hitting and, despite some nervous moments in the 90s, reached a thoroughly deserved century and then cut loose bagging 13 fours and 7 sixes before perishing to Spriggs for a fine 134, Cookham 221 for 3 from 40.
Lucas (25) came and went to Bishop and Thatcham looked to have stemmed the endless flow of runs when Spriggs sent back Metler for 2 but some useful lower order batting, particularly from Khalid with 23 from 9 balls, including 3 sixes, took the home side to a mammoth 304 for 9 at the innings close.
Spriggs finished with fine figures of 5 for 54 from his 11 over spell but Bishop’s uncharacteristic concession of 93 from 12 overs probably made the difference to restricting the home side to a realistic target, That said, it was a surprise that Cookham opted to use all 52 overs, something that they may have had cause to reflect on at the end of the game with Thatcham falling 83 runs short and only two wickets remaining.
