Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Stoke Green 2 on Sat 09 Jul 2016 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By four wickets
Match report
Cricket Report
Thatcham Town CC 2nd XI (233 for 6 from 48.5 overs) beat Stoke Green CC 2nd XI (232 for 6 from 51 overs) by four wickets
Thatcham's 2nd string completed the double over high flyers Stolen Green 2s with an impressive four wicket victory at Brownsfield on Saturday.
Chasing an imposing 232 run target but with 49 overs in which to get them, Thatcham's reply was hit by an early setback when Kieran Lynch had to retire injured due to a calf strain.
Simon Rider (19) and Stephen Bird set about building a base from which the home side could launch a later challenge and worked well together, picking of boundaries where possible and running well between the wickets.
Rider eventually succumbed to the impressive Irfaz Khan (1 for 60 from 17) and when Ben Coleman and Jamie Green came and went quickly to Gulfraz Khan (2 for 47 from 10), Thatcham found themselves at 90-odd for three.
Order was restored when Eddie Wylie joined Bird at the crease and, after a hesitant start, looked to punish anything with width, smashing a useful 45 in quick time to re-ignite the Thatcham innings.
Bird continued in fine form, rolling back the years and picking off any bad balls ruthless. However, when Wylie played inside a straight one from Bach and Mike Hobbs chipped a simple return catch to Tim Gilliam, Stoke Green found themselves back in the game.
Lynch returned to the crease and took a stand and deliver approach, whilst letting Bird have as much of the strike as possible.
Bird reached a well deserved century and, despite tiring slightly, continued to keep the clock ticking at 6 to 7 runs an over and leave Thatcham in the chase.
Stoke Green seemed unable to make the necessary break through on a wicket that flattened out once the new ball had lost its' shine and, despite picking up Lynch with the score on 229 and with only one over remaining, were unable to prevent Bird (128 not out including 17 boundaries) from seeing his team home with one ball to spare.
Earlier, in similar fashion to the Thatcham innings, Stoke Green had to work hard for early runs against the tight bowling of Mike Green and Tim Mahoney (3 for 38 from 13).
Desai provided the mainstay of the visitors innings with a hard worked century and skipper Farhan Sheikh provided late impetus with a hard hit 61 to allow a declaration one over early at 232 for 6 from 51.
Perry Moore bowled a marvellous 17 over spell of off-spin and his eventual figures of 3 for 88 from 17 didn't reflect fair reward. Nevertheless, Thatcham were delighted to pick up 25 points and push up to 5th in Division 4B, with a trip to Farnham Royal 1s ahead of them this Saturday.
