Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Burnham on Sat 17 May 2008 at 11.30am
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 11 runs

Match report We won the toss on a seam friendly wicket. Harland and Naqvi made good early progress and soon had the visitors in trouble, with Naqvi bowling Javed and soon followed Gandam LBW to Naqvi. Pete Edgcombe bowled very tight and was unlucky not to take a wicket in his spell. Naqvi accounted for Malik with straight forward catch from Jenkins. Jenkins came on to bowl and bowled well in his spell prior to lunch. Harland replaced Edgcombe and made the breakthrough removing Khan with a well taken catch by Wyatt at slip. Chris Bird found good rhythm in a quick spell prior to lunch and leaving Burnham in some trouble at 87-4. After the interval the pressure was maintained and Bird removed the dangerous left hander Nadeem for 43. Bird was replaced by Naqvi who bowled well in tandem with Harland, both taking regular wickets in as Burnham chanced more shouts towards the close of the innings. Naqvi picking up the final wicket to leave Burnham 166 all out in the 58th over.

Thatcham’s response did not begin well to the pace attack of Burnham, with Gav MacDonald falling early for just six. Duncan Johnson also falling quickly for a duck, leaving Thatcham with work to do at 15 for 2. Wyatt and Naqvi built a strong partnership, steadily chipping away at the modest target, however both fell within balls of each other leaving the game finely poised at 72-4. Dan Stone and Rak Patel, both batted well before and after tea, Patel removed after a having the better of Gandam for 23, Jenkins and Stone followed in quick succession to leave Thatcham back in trouble on 125 for 5. Bartholomew and Harland batted well to put Thatcham in the frame for the win, but Bartholomew fell to a simple return catch. Bird and Edgcombe followed in quick succession leaving Thatcham agonisingly close to the Burnham target at 155 all out.

It was a frustrating day and a game we really should have won, it was a seam friendly wicket, but we do need to show some more application, with a lot of the batsmen getting good starts but failing to convert these into match winning innings. The energy we showed in the field again paid dividends and the quick over rate does help us put pressure on the opposition when we are bowling with the discipline we have shown in the first two games. Simple fact is we need to win games like these if we want to continue competing in this league.
