Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Kidlington on Sat 07 Jun 2008 at 11.30am
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 59 runs
Match report
I think I can only describe Saturday as a bizarre game of two very distinct halves! We lost the toss and were inserted.
The lads made a scratchy start against good bowling from Dave Taylor, Steenholdt was erratic but did produce a decent ball among some dross, unfortunately this accounted for Jim Ettridge who I think must have been surprised by a decent nut from the young ozzie.
Dan Stone looked in great form playing some fine strokes. However Gav McDonald was soon to follow Ettridge producing a useful 20. Stone followed an over later to a jaffa from Taylor. Suddenly Thatcham were in a bit of trouble at 68-3. Ali Naqvi produced a good innings to steady the ship, but the wickets fell all too regularly with Wyatt and Johnson making single figures. Leaving the innings looking fragile at lunch with the score 108-5.
Rakesh Patel made a useful 18, but wickets continued to fall with only Harland making double figures in the tail, Naqvi batted superbly to make 42. The Thatcham innings closing on 155 all out in just 49 overs.
Kidlington got off to a flying start Taylor dispatching the ball to all parts. At 23-0 off 5 overs Thatcham needed a wicket to stem the flow of runs. Naqvi delivered with two wickets in an over. Harland followed up with a third. Naqvi again struck and then Nick Bishop produced a fantastic direct hit from fine leg to leave Kidlington in a world of trouble at 34-5. Harland then removed Ali and the tables were well and truly turned at 42-6.
A double bowling change saw Duncan Johnson and Chris Bird introduced. Johnson producing the goods with two further wickets. Naqvi came back for a blast before tea and produced the required result, a wicket. Leaving the result looking inevitable at 95-9. Johnson quickly resumed after tea taking the final wicket, Kidlington 96 all out and Johnson with figures of 6.5-3-8-3.
A superb turned around from all the boys, we have a superb bowling attack and are taking almost every chance in the field. We simply need to improve on the consistency with the bat and build partnerships. We have a strong batting line up, but it just doesn’t seem to be firing at the moment. I’m pleased with the fight and energy the boys are showing week in week out, the batting will come good we know the top order are more than capable at this level.
