Wokingham v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 14 Jun 2008 at 11.30am
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost By nine wickets
Match report
Thatcham were hit by Hurriance Doran on Saturday when they saw their useful first innings total of 269 for 6 blown away by Wokingham's Queensland Pro, Dan Doran, in just over 36 overs.
Doran set about the Thatcham bowlers with ease, despatching shots to the boundary with alarming regularity and making the run chase a formality as he added 143 for the first wicket with long term Wokingham run machine Ricky Soza inside 20 overs.
Chris Bird might have had Doran stumped with the total on 100 and Soza escaped a chance at long-on from the same bowler a little while later but otherwise there was little sign of an answer to the all out attack of Doran.
He eventually perished to a well taken catch by Paul Jenkins in the deep off Bird for an impressive 82 but by that time the die was cast and it was simply a case of when and not if Wokingham would overhaul their target.
If Thatcham thought the wicket might see a change in fortune, they were much mistaken as Soza continued accumulating runs in his unique style whilst new bat Wokingham Skipper Bushell plundered six dboundaries off his first seven deliveries.
Thatcham captain Duncan Johnson, standing in for the absent Andy Harland, tried hard to stem the tide but with no reward and by the time Nick Bishop was introduced into the attack as a last ditch attempt to make something different happen, Wokingham were alreay on 180 for 1 in just 25 overs.
At tea, the home side went in on 214 for 1 and took a mere 44 balls to polish off the remaining 60 runs, taking a maximum 25 points and top of the table. Thatcham managed a poor 5 point return for their efforts, which may be a little unjust bearing in mind how well their batsmen played on the day.
Earlier, having won the toss and decided to bat, Thatcham dominated the first two sessions play as, despite the quick loss of Gavin MacDonald for a duck, Daniel Stone and Jim Ettridge put on 135 for the first wicket, taking Thatcham to a solid 134 for 1 at lunch off 36 overs.
Stone went soon after the break, regretting that extra helping of pasta and looking to scamper the necessary single required to reach his half-cnetury only to be run out by a direct hit leaving Ali Naqvi to take centre stage with Ettridge, knocking up a quick fire 42 before departing.
Ettridge (94), who had been in good form throughout his innings, watchful against the new ball and his typical self in punishing anything loose, just missed out on a deserved century, playing a lazy clip to mid wicket but Steve Wyatt (31) saw that Thatcham pushed past the 250 mark.
Wickets fell in the run chase but a respectable 269 for 6 from the maximum sixty overs and good potential to bowl more than the required minimum 50 overs in return gave Thatcham much optimism for picking up useful bowling points and possibly a victory for their efforts.
Unfortunately, they hadn't accounted for the explosive hitting of Doran and went away from Wokingham with their tails between their legs.
Saturday sees Thatcham entertain Buckingham CC at Brownsfield and taking the many positives away from the batting performance, hope to restore order with their normally excellent bowling attack, which sees the welcome return of Harland.
