Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Buckingham Town on Sat 21 Jun 2008 at 11.30am

Match report On a day where chances of play looked very unlikely, Thatcham won the toss and elected to field. The game started on time conditions were very damp under foot. Rob Large set about the Thatcham attack, punishing anything loose, while Tomlinson scratched around! The opening pair bowled an uncharacteristic first spell, failing to make a break through. Nick Bishop was quickly introduced to stem the flow along with Chris Bird. The pressure told as the runs started to dry up and a boot less Tomlinson was run out superbly by Steve Bartholomew.
Carter joined Large with the score at 84-1, the pair continued to bat sensibly through the lunch interval and left themselves a good platform with wickets in hand to set a useful target after lunch. That they did with Large reaching his hundred just after the interval, departing shortly afterwards with a well taken catch by Bartholomew from Johnson. Carter continued on with overseas Bowden for company, hitting the ball well from ball one, however it was short lived with Carter caught by Johnson from the returning Naqvi. Harris was unfortunately dropped second ball, proving costly as he went on to hammer 43. Carter was removed for 73 with the score 244-4 with 4 overs remaining.
The score reached 271 with an over to go, what followed was the most bizarre last over I have experienced. First ball saw a run out, then Naqvi ripped through the tail with two great yorkers and completed a hat-trick with an LBW, a single was taken and then another run out followed. Five wickets falling in six balls, which was a first for all the players. Great way to wrap up the innings and get some valuable bonus points. Special praise goes to the spinners, I felt Nick, Chris and Dunc all bowled well to restrict the batters in tough conditions, with Ali finishing off the tail in effortless fashion.

272 was a big total to chase in 50 overs, but we knew we had to bat sensibly and keep wickets in hand. Unfortunately this was not to be with Gav MacDonald falling early to Pearson for just 5. However Steve Wyatt and James Ettridge then built a platform putting on 92 for the second wicket, unfortunately the rain brought tea forward and we lost 3 overs. Immensely frustrating as due to the rules overs are lost but the score is not recalculated.
Ali and James continued in the same style, punishing anything loose and pressing the field at any opportunity, Ali departed for 39 with Thatcham still in the hunt at 165-3. Danny Stone played a great cameo, playing some great innovative strokes to accelerate the run chase and unfortunately fell with one stroke too many for 33.
215-4 Thatcham were chasing the game, James Ettridge having played a superb knock was beginning tire, but he and Johnson almost made the chase, with Johnson having hit one cracking straight six was caught fractionally inside the line, due to a great peace of fielding from Tomlinson.
Harland promoted up the order to try to accelerate the run chase perished quickly and Paul Jenkins remained unbeaten with Ettridge with Thatcham amassing 249-6 in 47 overs.
When you consider we had 13 overs less and got so close to winning this one, it was disappointing but we have to take the positives from it that the boys batted superbly to get us even in the hunt for the win. The fielding was probably our worst performance of the season, which was disappointing with the spinners bowling well. However we are making ourselves a tougher side to beat, which is important games like this we have often lost in the past with imposing targets set, so the boys are doing well and I am pleased overall with the progress we are making at this level.
