Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Basingstoke & North Hants on Sat 05 Jul 2008 at 11.30am
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
On a day where chances of play again looked unlikely, Thatcham won the toss and elected to field. The game getting of to the best start fro Thatcham Harland taking a wicket with the first ball of the game.
Thatcham attacked in attempt to remove Stokes, who was in no mood to hang around, he set about Harland. Town stuck with it eventually paying off with Stokes popping a simple catch to Johnson at square leg off Harland.
A third quickly followed as Harland removing the left hander Williamson first ball through a superb catch from Wyatt. Woody bowled a good first spell of the season and was replaced by Jenks. With Harland replaced by Naqvi from the bottom end.
Naqvi quikly got the break through, removing the stubborn opener Foxley. Jenks joined in on the action, bowling Thiru and quickly followed with a second removing Nurse's off stump.
Naqvi carried on at the other end, Wyatt taking a smart catch with a hint of glove from Stone, to remove Rouse. Govett and Williamson held out until lunch, with B&NH 121-7 in some trouble.
Thatcham struggled to wrap up the innings with Govett batting particularly well, offering the only sensible innings making a well deserved 51. Harland made the break through, but Naqvi was required to return. It had the desired effect removing the stubborn Williamson and shortly afterwards Harris. We were pleased with the performance and the wicket wasn't doing anything untoward, so just a case of knocking off the runs.
Jim and Den set about the new ball, putting on a steady 28 before Jim was bowled by Stokes. B&NH eyeing an opportunity with Woody and Den steadied the innings taking us to 69-2 before Den was caught shortly after Gardiner was brought on. Ali followed quickly with a rare low score, also to Gardiner, this time LBW.
Thatcham had a bit of a wobble at 75-3, but Woody and Wyatt soon restored some confidence, taking us up to tea only requiring 21 to win, both batted superbly, unfortunately Woody was quickly dismissed after the interval and Wyatt then followed, with Stone and Johnson also quickly following…….a bit of a panic with Thatcham only requiring 10 but Rakesh and Jenks restored order seeing us home in the 48th over.
A second win on the bounce is fantastic, it puts us in the top half of the table and it was brilliant to follow a great win against Finch with another against Basingstoke & NH this week. We have a tough few games coming up that are crucial to the season to make sure we put some distance between ourselves and the teams in the bottom quarter of the table as it is very tight on the points front. With Harland unavailable, his likely replacement Bird the side will remain the same apart from this one change.
