Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Thame on Sat 12 Jul 2008 at 11.30am
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
Thatcham made it a hat-trick of victories to further cement their progress in the Home Counties Premier League set up and moved unexpectedly into the top 3 with a convincing win over fellow mid table rivals Thame Town at Brownsfield on Saturday.
With Wokingham being rained off at Kidlington, Thatcham now find themselves a mere 27 points behind leaders Farnham Royal, who lost at Buckingham on Saturday and with Farnham Royal playing 2nd placed Basingstoke this coming weekend there is a chance a Thatcham victory at Burnham could take them into 2nd place.
Saturday’s game saw Duncan Johnson win the toss and put the visitor’s into bat and right from the start the Thatcham new ball attack of Ali Naqvi and Julian Wood were on the money, the Thame openers Beard and Parmar playing and missing with regularity and it wasn’t long before the breakthrough came, Parmar edging Wood to Danny Stone behind the stumps for 8. Both Wood and Naqvi gaining significant movement off the pitch and in the air and the incoming Thame batsmen had no answers, Wynd (6), Bhatti (0) and skipper Rob Brooks (3) all edging Naqvi to Stone and when Nick Bishop replaced Wood he finally got rid of opner Beard for 27, Thame had only scored 56 runs and were in the 35th over, Wood had bowled 12 overs of which 9 were maidens !
Merry and Lachlan decided that instead of letting the Thatcham bowlers get even more of a grip they would put bat to ball and Merry hit a quickfire 15 before becoming another Stone/Naqvi wicket, giving the Thatcham keeper 5 catches and then Naqvi took a stunning caught and bowled to remove Lachlan and take another HCPL 5 wicket haul.
Johnson just had enough time to effect the run-out of Meredith, a smart piece of work from the Thatcham skipper, deflecting a shot from Higgs on to the stumps leaving Meredith stranded and that was the last success, Higgs providing some lusty blows at the death to get his side upto 122 for the loss of 8 wickets from the 56 allotted overs, 4 overs a side had been lost due to a rain break earlier in the day.
All the Thatcham bowlers did an excellent job, Naqvi 5-58 from 25 overs with good support from Wood 1-10 from his 12, Bishop 1-14 from 6 and Johnson 0-28 from 10.
With 46 overs to reach the target the home side were taking no chances, especially with heavy showers all around the ground and it was Rakesh Patel who joined Julian Wood to open up for Thatcham and both batsmen launched a ferocious assault on Merry and Lachlan with the ball hitting the fence with alarming regularity for the visitors as the bowlers struggled to bowl the right length, too short to Patel who smashed a 6 and 5 fours in a quickfire 29 before he was caught by Higgs off Lachlan but he had done his job and taken the game away from Thame, the home side 61-1 from just 6 overs when Patel fell.
Wood was blazing away at the other end and was joined by Steve Wyatt and it didn’t matter where the ball was it was despatched as Thatcham reached their target in the 20th over, Wood finishing unbeaten on 59, hitting 6 fours and 4 sixes and Wyatt 39 with 3 fours and 3 sixes, 104 of Thatcham’s runs coming in boundaries in a convincing victory.
