Match report Thatcham II’s completed a second consecutive victory with a six wicket win at hom to Reading III.

The visitors chose to bat first on a slightly damp, green wicket and soon found runs hard to come by from the opening pair of Julian Wood and Daniel Stephenson. Although neither took a wicket in this spell they ensured Thatcham were well in control from the start.
The introduction of Lambourn Legend Tim Mahoney brought immediate dividends as he trapped Aziz lbw with his second ball. Dorrington (27) and Wheeler took the score to 41 before Mahoney struck three times in two overs assisted by a couple of fine catches and John Williams removed the limpet like Dorrington as four wickets fell for four runs.
Singh (26) survived a couple of chances to help make the score respectable and Berryman with 31 played well and showed what was possible on a slow but true wicket. The innings closed on 132-9 with Mahoney and Williams taking 4-30 and 4-36 respectively and Wood 1-44.

Wood went in first with Iain Cottingham to try to get the runs as quickly as possible but he fell to a sharp slip catch for 7 and when Cottingham and Stuart Newman soon followed Thatcham were in some trouble at 25-3 from 13 overs.
However, last week’s major contributors Matthew Denness and Stephen Bird showed maturity beyond their years, knowing wickets in hand would always make Thatcham favourites chasing such a low total. The run rate only got above two in the 29th over but then they started to accelerate, taking the score to 81 when Bird (24) miscued to cover.
Any hopes Reading had of getting back into the game were dashed as Denness decided enough was enough, signalling his intention to finish the game quickly with a huge six over midwicket. Simon Rider, was quickly into his strides, running quick singles and despatching the bad balls and they added the 52 runs needed in just nine overs, Denness finishing on 63 and Rider 22.
