Match report Poor fielding, worse batting. That pretty much sums up Thatcham II’s draw away at Eversley on Saturday.

The home side were inserted and were positive from the start, ably assisted by dropped catches and misfields. Jones survived a chance before he was removed by Gary Waterston (1-26) for 15. Dixon survived the next chance but wasn’t removed quite as quickly, going on to make 78 before the persevering, bionic man Tim Mahoney (1-78) had him well caught by Steve Bartholomew, who then took another good catch to get rid of Green for 56.
Two direct hits, one from Simon Rider, who also took 1-57, which was given and one from Matthew Denness which wasn’t, completed the only worthwhile pieces of fielding in the innings. O’Kelly hit a lusty 39 to take Eversley to a declaration at 243-4 in 47 overs.

Thatcham’s reply started solidly, Denness (19) and Rider adding 36 in 12 overs before Denness was caught at slip. The returning Chris Brown (22) kept Rider on his toes with some excellent running and they added 55 in 16 overs before Brown fell trying to push the score along.
Martin Keep then came in and his positive brand of play was just what Thatcham needed with the run rate required up to six an over. Rider reached an excellent first fifty for the second team and was set to bat through when a lapse in concentration saw him stumped for 65. Still, with 80 needed from 12 overs and 7 wickets in hand Thatcham were well placed.
Unfortunately it turned out to be well placed to collapse as Keep followed in the next over for 33 and in all they lost 7 wickets for 24 in 8 overs as panic set in. It was left to soon to be in laws Mahoney and Waterston to bat out the final 5 overs and secure a draw.
Dixon completed a fine all round match with 5-36 and Jones took 3-39.
